PEERLESS PARTS FOR SALE THREAD

LXI.  On ebay, there is what looks like the correct Ignition Switch for a 1927 Peerless for sale. It has a white, round background about 5¨ in diameter with positions ¨Off¨ and ¨Dash¨ indicated. IMO, it is for a 1926/27 Peerless Mod. 6-60, and possibly for the Mod. 6-80(26-27), 6-90(27). I think all 1928/29 Peerlesses used the more elaborate glass-faced instrument panel.

The 1927 6-72 and 8-69, I believe, had the 3-football-shaped separate gauge clusters......much like a Packard or Pierce at that time.

LXII.  Heidi Ho! On ebay, someone in Australia has what looks like an extremely early Peerless car item, a Script Brass Tag saying: "The Peerless Motor Car Co. Cleveland, O. U.S.A."  for sale.

Whether it''s from a 1915 Model 48-Six or one of the radically different, technically advanced 1902 Peerlesses, I don''t know. I've never seen one of these.

Starting price 15.63 USD/20.00 AUSD, auction ends 3/22/18.

Have you tried calling Gary at (937)776-0222? 1927S gave him as the contact person for the Peerless parts a couple of years ago here on the Peerless Forum re: the posts and photos of a couple of truckloads of parts they had f/s [see post #102 on this thread]. It is possible everything was sold.

Something from a post in Cars For Sale Forum regarding a 1930 Peerless Model 6-61A Sedan for sale that may be helpful:

Q: Jrbrks (9/20/18)  "Can anyone address how difficult mechanical parts are to locate or purchase?"

A:  jeff_a (10/2/18) "Thanks for asking. I looked at some previous posts of yours and saw that you know your way around antiques and have a 1929 Franklin. As you know, pre-WWII cars are all made of rare parts, except for the Fords. Maybe this is obvious & old news, but if you got that Peerless, this is what's out there....

  • Ebay. Looked today and saw a couple of distributors, some rotors & points that supposedly were shared by Peerless & other makes, some new hydraulic brake lines, a radiator & shell, and 3 aluminum Peerless hubcaps. Sometimes also original & r/p motometers, Peerless radiator emblems, instrument panels, V-8 engines, Radiators, timing chains, 4-barrel Ball & Ball Carburetors for Peerless V-8s, rad shells, engines for a Model 56, a 1929 6-81, a 1929 6-61, distributors, and logo tire gauges. The best thing I ever saw there was the Car Serial number plate for the last Peerless built.
  •  Parts. The 300+ Peerless owners have worldwide as extras. It may seem an impossible task to find out who they are....but I keep a register of all known Peerless cars & trucks worldwide (361). It took ten years of my life to do the research...but it's fascinating to find there are 8 in MO, 18 in NY, 4 in S. Africa, 2 or 3 dozen in Europe, etc.
  •  A Peerless owner in Maine. Amassed world's largest collection of Peerless cars, about 12 counting parts cars + 2 or 3 school buses full of parts. The gentleman died in 2015, but his family has many parts for sale(See "AACA Peerless Forum", "Peerless For Sale Department" thread, Post #161). Family has sold 1 car but picked up 4 in the last 5 years.
  •  A Peerless owner in Ohio. He bought a collection w/ 4 truckloads of cars & parts in 2011, including spare engines, spare frames, & enough body panels to build a couple of sedans, eventually having 7 cars 1927-1930. Still has 4. A couple of years ago, he advertised he had a lot of parts for sale, including photos(see Peerless Forum under "Peerless Parts for Sale Thread", posts #98 & #102). Don't know how much is left, if any.
  •  Not a parts source, but there's a shop in the Tampa, FL area that's restored 7 Peerless cars recently(1926-1931 model years). They may be able to help you with your car or share repair knowledge. Pistorius Collectible Autos, www.oldwheel.com.

Good news! The 1929 Peerless is by far the best-represented of all the surviving cars. Unlike the 1908s(1 left) and 1921s(1 left), there are about 60 of them, plus several 1930 6-61s like this one. The Six-61 Sedans cost $1,395 in 1929. Re: replica parts, it's limited. Lucas tires of course, spark plugs, some r/p motometers on ebay, a bronze Peerless Eagle radiator mascot sold in Irvine, CA. Also some cast stainless radiator mascots from MI, and some door handles of the same material.

I have followed this Peerless for 4 or 5 years, since it was in SW Missouri. Someone had it in a garage for decades. Don't know if that owner did any work on it , but it's a highly original car. Kind of unusual model. Technically doesn't exist. It's really a "continuation car" of a 1929 6-61, but sales were so good in 1929 they had to continue production into the 1930 model year for a few months after they got orders for 8,236 in one day at the New York Auto Show. In theory, all Peerlesses for the '30/'31/'32 model years were straight-8 cars. Triple cowl vents & "6-61A" designations on the I.D. plate separate it from the 1929 6-61. Same Continental engine and h.p.: 215 cu. in. and 62 h.p., I believe."

LXVII.  REPRO PARTS! I see that a company that makes and restores car & bike emblems has repro Peerless Motor Number Plates. Go to www.nostalgicreflections.com in the automobiles section. There are 10 or 20 pages of items there...I went to the 3rd page and saw an aluminum one($185) brass ($235). Etched & hand-painted, both have a series of seventeen 1909 to 1921 patent dates displayed and either a blank pad for motor number or they will stamp it for a fee. They also have RAULANG Body Tags, etched & nickel-plated, for $135.

For instance -- if you had:

  • the oldest Mod. 56, a 1916 V-8, it would say "1", "56  1", or possibly "56A  1", I believe.
  • the last Peerless Eight-69 engine stamped, a 1928,  it would say "69  37503", I believe.
  • the first Peerless Eight-125 to have its engine stamped, a 1929, it would say "12K - 501". This Peerless straight-8 car was more powerful than any GM car in 1929.*
  • the last Peerless to come out of the factory, a 1932 Custom Eight, it would say "13K - 3653". Noted Peerless Club member Matt Lynch has the Car Serial # Plate for this car.

peerless motor car motor number plate aluminum......raulang body plate tag nickel

from Nostalgic Reflections

* The General Motors "department store" was pretty rich in departments that year, with Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, LaSalle, Marquette, Oakland, Oldsmobile, Pontiac, and Viking, but none of them could match the horsepower of Peerless' prestige model, the 114 h.p. 8-125.

My son found this T-74-1 transmission in the woods of Oregon. I am an antique Benz guy, and know nothing whatsoever about Peerless. Can anyone here advise whether this is likely to be of interest to anyone. Will try to get photos of casing, marked "T-74-1" over "W. G. Co"

over "N". Top shifter is in place, as are both front and rear shafts and drain plug, so it may have remained intact and watertight, despite having likely removed for some good mechanical failure reason.

Is this of any value to Peerless collectors for parts? Please advise.20210411_120119.jpg.8577f7f03817e8325e943925900ddab9.jpg20210411_120115.jpg.e192b437e11f6dbfc71ccfdae069e375.jpg20210411_120107.jpg.06f32557195b3af28ad0d1744107982f.jpg

That transmission was used by several different companies......Pierce, Stutz, Stude, and others. They are all different, and not much interchanges between them.

BenzGuy,

Thanks for posting in the Parts section. I don't recognize the transmission. Does the abbreviation stand for Warner Gear Co.? While I have read that they used Warner on some Peerlesses, I do not know the years. As you know, Peerless spanned 4 decades of vehicle manufacturing, and 12 counting other products. Have you found a connection to a Peerless on a parts database or know the model and year?

Jeff, as I said, I know nada about Peerless, but I originally posted this here because some chap named Jeff Brown mentioned this transmission designation in his Dec 11, 2015 post concerning the upcoming sale of Bob DeBone's 1930's parts. No skin off my butt either way - just thought it might be of interest to you Peerless collectors. If and when anyone expresses a restoration interest or anything other than an academic expert shot across my admittedly inexpert bow, including any identifying marks or characteristics which would distinguish a Peerless vs other maker's version, I'll ask my son to relocate it to check. Otherwise, it will remain another rusting forest object only potentially useful as a boat anchor.

Benz Guy , I would drag it home. You might open it up and find it full of grease  and OK. Franklins used Warner Gear boxes and they are all in good demand. Im in NY or Id ask for it. You have nothing to loose> It is Warner Gear .

Have 3 what we believe to be Peerless engines. One spins free didn't try the other 2. All with transmission. One electric start.  Can anyone use the stuff? Not sure what it's worth. We want to sell them. One has a frame also. Have two rears and a front axle believe they may be stutz. Also for sale.received_4426001694113530.jpeg.4d49f6cd56f2574defbdd3bfe4edc380.jpegreceived_4251951944896045.jpeg.a9727bfe803cf7a8426a3e6c458daf71.jpegreceived_966285050831709.jpeg.d4eaf6fa93edbaa1074ab25790e867ad.jpegreceived_348899246911209.jpeg.234801b6b95d2416a89485508cb79904.jpegreceived_653339995638335.jpeg.234883ff42d5ee998e6ae7ef0671ce4c.jpegreceived_909503659645849.jpeg.b4a28591bf3ae240564da95db887ea4c.jpegreceived_1652113591653287.jpeg.d290f389a6971f53a202eed613f287c9.jpeg

I would be interested in at least one of the V8 engines but I don’t have a ton of money. I don’t own a Peerless but would like to restore an engine.  Where are you located?

I'll send you a PM. There are only 3 known aught-nine Peerlesses. Which one was at Pebble Beach, David Baird's Model 19, the white Model 19, or the green Model 25 with the 616 cubic inch engine?

Funny, when at Hershey in 2013 there was a guy across from the Peerless Booth with a 1909 Coil Box for sale. A chap who was planning on buying a magnificent 1911 Peerless raceabout bought it, after first comparing it to the one on the '09 Peerless in our tent.

Jeff A - can you help answer questions on value, etc.   I suspect Mr Quality would be looking for 5 figures for each motor.  Not sure who is restoring V8 Peerless but you might being the Peerless guy.

I don't have the room for a car anymore but have thought about restoring a drive train for fun.

Did you read the thread on General Interest called "Stutz Help Needed" started Thursday by Quality? I don't think anyone knows what these engines are or what they were in -- so they might not have anything to do with the Peerless Motor Car Co. Would you still want to send one to an engine rebuilder if it was for vehicles from any of these companies? Most of these were very low-production manufacturers:

  1. Abbott
  2. aircraft, unknown
  3. Apperson
  4. Common Sense tractor
  5. Daniels
  6. Douglas
  7. Drummond
  8. Monarch
  9. Murray
  10. Peerless.........started out with a motor identical to a Herschell-Spillman in 1916, but it became Peerless' V-8 very soon afterwards due to constant improvements all the way into 1928.
  11. Rock Falls
  12. Ross
  13. Sandusky tractor
  14. Standard

The reason I ask is that the original poster's father-in-law thought they were Stutz engines, so the background information on them doesn't give us much to go on. There's also the point that Richard Lichtfeld mentioned that H-S made V-8s with both 3"x5" and 3 1/4"x5" B&S. I didn't know if you just wanted a V-8, or one that was in a Peerless.

Don't know of an engine rebuilder that specializes in Peerless V-8s, but there's a restoration shop down in Odessa, FL that's restored 7 or 8 1926-1932 Peerlesses, all with Continental sixes, Peerless sixes, or Continental straight-8s.

Two people have asked about "value" but there is no set value for any Peerless engine. Maybe a running, tuned-up motor is worth more than one that isn't, but it's case by case. It's not like Corvettes or Mustangs...or their parts...where there's 10,000 in every state. You could ask a parts store or Bing or Google "What is a 1919 Peerless V-8 engine worth?" and you will get a blank, most likely. You might find an individual with one for sale.

One interesting thing re: the Peerless V-8s -- it wasn't till the 9th version of it that it had detachable heads...the first 8 versions were just like the early Cadillac V-8s: no detachable heads. The Chronology is De Dion Bouton ---> Cadillac/Northway ---> Herschell-Spillman ---> Peerless. All with similar head designs.

Here are a couple of engines, one from a 1917 Daniels and one from a 1922 Peerless. I posted the 1st one on Friday {General Discussion Forum...."Stutz Help Needed" thread} and nobody really looked at it. Look at the spark plugs on the H-S Daniels, then at the spark plug/brass priming cup pairing on the Series 7 Peerless engine. Exhaust on both is run backwards. Same water return manifolds, too.
