Guest my3buicks
I saw a 54 Skylark advertised that states it has factory ordered stainless inner fender wells instead of the usual painted.I want to learn something here - I did not realize this was an option or avialable - so I guess the question is - was it? MrEarl
I don't know, maybe the circus folks at the House of Mirrors can tell him. Edited September 29, 2011 by MrEarl (see edit history)
MrEarl
OK, I'll get down off my high horse and tell what I know about the car.It just sold at BJ for under 40K. This car and the stainless inner fender wheel wells was discussed here Very interesting Skylark back when it was on ebay. There have been numerous claims that "some" '54 Skylarks came with chrome parts such as valve and plug covers, battery brackets and even vent covers on the firewall. I have my doubts about latter two. I have never found parts numbers for any of these items so can not confirm or deny the claims. I certainly like the looks and would love to own this car. Wish I knew more Keith, hopefully a Skylark owner aficionado will chime in. Guest BigDogDaddy
That Skylark is very nice. What is the large tank on the inner fenderwell on the passenger side of the engine compartment ?
Guest Mr T
That would be the hydraulic cylinder for powering the windows and conv top. Cheers,Ed
MrEarl
uhmmmmm, never seen one on another Skylark..... I've seen similar aftermarket tanks that were used as a vacuum air assist for the windshield wipers. Sorta like the 55-56 brake system tanks. If you know this is for sure what it is Mr T, I'd love to hear more.
Guest BigDogDaddy
I've never seen a tank like that on any Skylarks. Though I haven't seen too many 54s. The 53 Skylarks do not have it, and my 53 Roadmaster has the power windows and seats, and does not have a tank like that mounted under the hood.Phil
Glassesguy
Keith and Lamar: Wonder where he got his claim that there were 7 of the stainless equipped cars built? How about his statement about leaf springs in the rear? Three speed Dynaflow??Trunk material ?? Any more ideas on that extra tank under the hood? Fr. Buick
I'm thinking the extra tank is an after-market oiling device - adds a little oil into the fuel for top-engine lubrication...???A mechanical version of adding a little Marvel Mystery Oil at every fill-up of gas.Maybe??? MrEarl
Here is a Marvel Mystery oil system in a an awesome driver 54 Super at Danvers last year. Very interesting
Guest BJM
I am still curious about the authenticity and what would happen if it showed up to be 400 point judged at a BCA National. It would be great if we had a 53-54 Skylark expert, we probably do but I don't who that would be, that could shed some light on this one. Isn't the inner fender an extreme bend where a custom inner fender would be expensive to do? This would lead one to believe the story of it being a factory application. Finally, a question was posed about asking the owner to explain his comment regarding there being 7 of these. Has anyone asked the owner (or previous owner) for documentation of this claim, diplomatically of course?
