Worlds most expensive Pierce-Arrow in 1975

Recommended Posts

I came across an article in an old copy of Modern Maturity some time ago. It told of a Mr.Wayne Pritchard of Great Bend Kansas who purchased a 1920 Pierce-Arrow coupe for the sum of $62.50 in 1955 I believe. In secrecy over the next 20 years he restored the car using 23+ karat gold, silver and nickle finishes. He finished the car and revealed it in the Summer of 1975 and shortly there after sold it to a Denver man for an undisclosed price. That man later sold it to The Dutch Wonderland Museum in Penn. for $180,000.00. Pritchard was 81 years old when he sold it in 1975 and is gone on to his reward I'm sure. Does anyone out there know where the Pierce-Arrow is today ? Or who might own it or even if it still exists ? Mark

It was displayed at Carlisle in the late '70's. The gold was actually 4 in square sheets of gold leaf covered with clear. Interesting effect but not particularly good looking.

This car ended up overseas and was recently (in the last year or two) resold at an RM auction-I believe it was at one of the London, England sales. Really ugly if you ask me. It would have been more impressive if it was an authentic restoration!
