Valley Pan Gasket on 350 V8

I'm working on a 68 Olds 350 V8 engine and recently purchased an intake manifold gasket. Having past experience with the 455 that has a full valley pan 1-piece gasket and seeing one online for the 350, I purchased it. After the fact I noticed that the gasket was for 73 and up 350 engines. The full pan gasket is supposed to reduce heat in the intake manifold by blocking hot oil.

My question is: Can I use the valley pan gasket on the 68 350 or should I use the 2 piece non-valley gasket?

The difference in the 73-up vs. the 72-down gaskets is the size of the holes for the heat crossover port. If the hole in your gasket seals to your heads and intake, it will work fine. I don't remember offhand which one has the larger hole.

Actually what I was more interested in is the lack of the valley pan itself as part of the gasket. The 68 gasket may have different size ports which would be a reason for the different applications but why is the 68 gasket missing the valley pan? My understanding is that the purpose of the valley pan is to keep hot oil off of the bottom of the intake manifold and raising the temperature of the manifold.

Has anyone been in that 68 350 before you? It should have a full valley pan gasket same as other 65-later Olds V8s and if it does not, that tells me someone installed aftermarket rail gaskets somewhere along the way.

I've used both styles and anymore I stick with the turkey tray. I prefer an OE GM part or a Victor gasket better in this application. I've had more than one FelPro come thru with the head locator holes punched wrong.

The 1964-65 (and possibly 66) 330 motors used metal intake gaskets with a separate valley tray. By 1967 the one-piece metal gasket was used by the factory, as Glenn points out. Likely that intake has been off before. The early gaskets will work.

Ahh. So perhaps the problem is really with Jegs and Summit that both list the valley pan as being only available for 73 and up 350s when it should work for all (which I would have expected). The intake is going on this weekend and I have the rail and pan versions. I will go with the pan first and, if there's a problem, go with the rail. Thanks!

The first thing you learn when it comes to Oldsmobiles is to assume that any on-line catalog listing is wrong until proven otherwise. Don't even get me started on engine mounts...

In any case, FelPro MS96009 (about $20 from RockAuto) is correct for the early 350 motors and MS96027 (about $17, go figure...) for the later ones.
