Guest Jacques Matz
Restoring my 37 limo, I would really appreciate to get any information, including picture if possible, on the microphone that was used by the passengers. Thank you all.
Mark Shaw
This is what I found...for sale - car intercom microphone - I think --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Hi- somewhere I acquired this microphone, in nice condition, possibly a car intercom microphone as seen in early (20's, 30's) limousines.I was thinking of putting earplugs on each of the wire leads, sticking them in my ears, and let my wife use the microphone to tell me how to drive.....but that's probably not a good idea.$45 postpaid anywhere in continental United States. Email me as I'm a stranger to this forum. Joke. Pfffttt.....David.Coco@hphood.com __________________David Coco, Winchester Va. bubba
That microphone is for an RCA home recording phonograph from around 1930.bubba
Guest outlaw car man
I've seen the set up, somewhere- I think. Just on researching my 90s-AS I REMEMBER, it's like a funnel that you talk into, that goes up front. Like the old movies where the old guy has a hearing thing he holds up.Please don't think I know, just stabbing from memory which is bad these days.HMMMM ? FLYER15015
Hey Sandy,Don't your '33's have a "speaking tube" in them ? In the old movies it is just that. A small funnel (with a cork on a chain) that goes from the rear door hinge area under the car and up to the drivers left ear on the front door post. Should be an inch or so in diameter.Mike in Colorado
Guest outlaw car man
Mine are the 7 passenger sedans, the L model, limo upgrade, might have ? $125 bucks extra in 1933. Paul Rickman had mentioned to me some time ago, that there was a 33 90L in Califonia with the intercom tube still in the car, but the car was in sad, shapeLike the jump seats, they probably didn't change much from 32 o 39 or so. ( guess ) Probably the Cadillac , Packard and other had the same company make them, with a different logo or something. Good way to start a search. Orange juice cans and a string !!??Hey Sandy,Don't your '33's have a "speaking tube" in them ? In the old movies it is just that. bubba
Speaking tubes where madame would tell Jeeves to stop at "The Club" were used in limousines in the 190's and teens. This was as you say a tube to talk into and the voice would be projected out from a horn behind Jeeves. With the advent of the radio horn in the 1920's the speaking tube was sent out to the barn and the "electric microphone came into the limo. Now Jeeves still had a horn behind his head but it had a round can on the bottom called a "driver" no pun intended! The driver had wires to the microphone which was stored in a pocket on a retractable reel sometimes. Included in this there might be a button to press to activate it. It was this way into the 1930's until the microphone became sensitive enough to just have it behind a round grill in the somewhere above the smoking set and a button in the armrest to activate it. Jeeves now has a speaker behind a grill to the left of his left foot in the kick panel. There is another type where the mic and speaker is in the divider partition and is one piece. This appeared in the late 20's I believe and was used for years.I think the 37 Buick would have either of the last two I mentioned.Hope this helped.bubba
Guest outlaw car man
Bubba- Any clue what the 1933 90L had for an intercom system ? As I mentioned Paul Rickman said a guy in California has the system, don't know his name. I've never seen a 90L or very little about them or mention of the intercom. Maybe get enough interest here Mr. Matz will get a led on one. When I had the green 90 down to the bare bones, I didn't see any provisions for a system or anything, at least in the 7 passenger model. There was an extra hole drilled for something & wiring above the piller switch , maybe for an optional intercom ?? BTW, good information as always, thanks- Good luck Mr. Matz, interesting search. Guest Jacques Matz
All - thank you for the information. I can confirm that there is wiring on the right passenger seat and that the mic most probably was placed on the panel next to the armrest. Not a lot of information nor pics so far - please help so I can start my research and hopefully I will find one to buy. Tks for the support. Guest Jacques Matz
Thanks Brian - I have attached the picture in case anyone know further details on this microphone and would like to share it. Interesting enough is the chrome plate next to the microphone which has two selection buttons (why two? - Driver has only one). It does not look original but I might be wrong though. Anyway, I asked the seller of this car more information! I also asked the membership roster to get more information directly from '37 90L owners. It should be on its way by now.Best regards Edited September 20, 2011 by Jacques Matz (see edit history)
