Cubelodyte
Hi all,I'm cleaning fifty years of gunk off of the generator of my '52 72R. Usually when I clean these components up there is a trace somewhere, a clue, a little scrap of paint or three that indicates the part's original color. So far I've found no clues as to what color the generator housing might have been painted, if any.Was it bare steel, or was some paint applied to them? Anybody know?
Guest Ray RI
From what I can see on mine, I believe it was painted black
Bhigdog
Can't go wrong with semi gloss or satin black. OEM appeared to be painted with cheap chassis black. The pully/fan and nut might be open to debate...........Bob
60FlatTop
The best paint I have found for "chassis black" in the last 20 years is Valspar Satin black. It is real; nice with an epoxy primer undercoat.Bernie
Ben Bruce aka First Born
Hey, Cube, definatly black. Perhaps find an auto electrical repair shop locally and ask what they use. Otherwise as above, semigloss or flat black. ben

Guest Bob Call
Yes, Delco generators were chassis black so it disappears when a petroleum based solvent is used to clean the parts.
Guest rsd9699
Mineral spirits is the best cleaner if your trying to salvage any of the original paint on parts.I have seen the generators in all types of black paint including the wrinkle and hammer-tones.There are other colors and some were even chromed. The end plates were not painted originally - just the core.Ron
Cubelodyte
Thanks for the tip about mineral spirits. I'll have to file it away for future reference since there really didn't seem to be any original paint left on this piece. It came out looking alright. Thanks again for the help, guys!
