Guest fast-ace
I'm having trouble locating the correct rear axle seal. The '64 parts manual shows an axle with tapered roller bearing and inner & outer seals. My car instead has a ball bearing and an inner oil seal. '64 manual shows such a seal for Valiant & Dart, but not for Chrysler. Anyone know if they are the same or a modern part number? I hate to tear this down before I locate the parts. NTX5467
For a place to look at scans of the 1964 Chrysler car parts book, go tojholst.net Chrysler 300K Home PageClick on "Rear Axle" and it'll bring up the illustrated break-down of your axle (Chrysler), which shows the tapered rear wheel bearing and spindle nut on the end of the axle shaft.Follow the __-__-__ group designation number into the parts listing grid and it'll bring you to the Chrysler parts number (at the time the catalog was printed) for the seal you're seeking. With that number, you should be able to take it to your auto supply to get them to cross-ref it to a current production seal in a line (as in National) they have access to.1964 was the last year for this type of rear axle shaft bearing. 1965 had the more modern roller ball style bearing, where you had to remove the axle shaft with the bearing pressed onto it, then dismantle the bearing to get it off of the shaft. Then the new bearing and such was pressed onto the axle shaft and the whole assembly was put back into the rear axle housing. Also check out www.jholst.net/64-supplement/supplement.pdffor the Service Manual Supplement for the 1964 Chrysler 300KFor a longer list of what has been archived, click the "Dust to Dust" link on the left hand menu jholst.net Dust to Dust PageFor some OUTSTANDING reading and watching, from an earlier time . . . much earlier multi-media technoloty . . . Master Technician Service Conference Films - Chrysler's Training for MechanicsThese are the archived Chrysler Master Technician Service Conference training materials . . . book plus "film strip". LOTS of neat stuff in there!!!!For the record, my initial research was from my "trusted" trusty source, RockAuto Auto Parts, BUT their catalogs are in error as to rear wheel bearings and seals, it appears, as they list the same ones for the '64 as for the '68 Chryslers, which was a completely different rear axle.Hope this might help!NTX5467
Guest Bob Call
Sounds like your car might be a late year production and might have the 65 rear axle assembly. Look at the parts book references given above and see if yours looks like the 65 axle.
Guest fast-ace
Thanks all for the helpful links- Both the 1964 & 1965 parts books list the same tapered roller bearing axle-that is not what I have. I have a ball bearing axle held in by a flange. Looks just like the one in the parts book for Dart & Valiant. Being smaller cars than the 300K, I'm unsure if its the same size Rear axle. I hope to pull it apart next week & then should know more.
