keiser31
What is the difference between a Car Guy and a Gear Head??"Car guys" love most cars...gearheads can actually work on them and are mostly interested in the specs (from what I gather after all these years of being involved with cars). I am NOT saying that "car guys" cannot do the work...I am just saying "gearheads" are more about performance.
Rusty_OToole
Gear heads dont change oil.... they change the whole engine. Car guys buy wax by the six pack.

Steve Moskowitz
Sorry, but to me that is like asking what is a "classic" car! Means different things to different people but enjoy the debate!
West Peterson
My dad's a car guy. I don't think he's ever waxed a car in his life. I think his motto is something like, "I'll wash my car twice a year, whether it needs it or not."
Steve_Mack_CT
Changing engines vs. waxahalics (like me) is a good differentiator, but I also have always thought of the car guy as perhaps getting into the hobby via a "car of his youth" and a "car collector" as "graduating" to eras other than just a car of his (or her) youth. Perhaps a sub-debate??There is another term to quickly identify a serious car guy - that would be - - ACTIVE AACA MEMBER!
Barry Wolk
What about those of us that do both? I thoroughly enjoy the sensual feeling of waxing my curvaceous beauties, but strangely enjoy bloodying my knuckles in an engine pull.West, you've met and had conversations with my wife, even judged with her. Isn't she a "car guy"?
West Peterson
She's a car guy. I'll be judging with her at Glenmoor, too... maybe not on the same team, though.
Barry Wolk
It'll be interesting to get your take on the '33 Continental, as to where you would place it along the "survivor" continuum.
Guest mortsciguy
I think the poverty of youth turned many car guys into gear heads. If you can't afford to hire it done, you learn how to fix it yourself. If you enjoy the wrenching part, you continue doing it, even after the finances are not a driving factor. Same deal with "lawn guys".Kelly

Barry Wolk
No, I live a neighborhood where maybe 3 people cut their own lawn. I get a certain satisfaction out of cutting my own.
poci1957
What is the difference between a Car Guy and a Gear Head??:confused:Don, I guess they are often used interchangeably, but I rather like keiser31s definition. I also like the British variant "petrolhead". Todd C

Todd C-----------------------------------------------------------------------------Hi Todd, As you know I love cars-ALL cars. To drive, to race, to polish and wax, to paint, to rebuild, to restore, and almost forty years in the industry. Sometimes in the middle of a project even having a hard time sleeping, or just dreaming cars.http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5254/5464491827_4a19a998ef.jpg My wife thinks I'm crazy but I've been that way from day one.Don
Guest mortsciguy
Barry might collect lawnmowers... I hire them. I , for one, would rather pull a transmission using a bumper jack and a creeper board than do lawn work. But then most folks would rather have a root canal w/o novacaine than do my work...funeral director/embalmer. There's something out there for everybody!Kelly

Guest mortsciguy
Just an illiteration, my friend. I use jack stands AND oak cribbing! With my background in science and chemistry, I would like to spend years to come using my expertise to convert beer, wine and scotch into a yellow, and highly saline, liquid.Kelly
