Didn't Quite Make It Part II

Recommended Posts

Well, got up this morning and pulled the valve cover and oil filter off. Cleaned out the filter can and filter lines and the orifice that goes through the cylinder head. All of that was clear so I put the filter back on and started it up without the valve cover. All push rods are getting good oil but the very back one by the firewall. It has a LOT more play in it than the others too. I can move it up and down maybe about a 1/2 in or so by hand whereas the others have almost no play at all. It also has small bubbles coming up through it around where the rocker arm attaches to the push rod while the motor is running. I do believe I have a collapsed lifter back there. If that's the case, how hard is it to replace the lifters? Only thing that really concerns me is adjusting them when I get the new ones back in. Service manual is a little confusing when describing that whole process. Any advice, experiences, or pictures on ANY aspect of lifter replacement would be appreciated. Also, don't know if this is possible but....if the oil passage in that back rocker arm and/or push rod is clogged, could that keep my lifter from working correctly due to lack of oil? Could I perhaps pull that rocker arm and push rod off, clean them, and fix my problem?

Anything clogged back there can cause the lifter not to pump up. The lifters are fed by the rocker shaft. To replace the lifter, you need to pull the side cover off the engine. Get a new gasket first...I use high tack or something on the cover side of the gasket for easy removal later, if necessary. There should be some threads on here about valve adjustment when it comes to that...if everything is that gummed up, you may end up pulling that lifter to clean it out anyway. If you end up replacing one, break it in like you would a new cam. I'd be pulling off that rocker shaft next and cleaning everything.

If you pull 1 lifter I would pull them all and disassemble them all. How long did you say that mtr sat up??? I really hope you pull that oil pan, just my 2 cents. I know the TSM is vague on the adjusment procedure but after I read it a few times it stated making a little sence.
