Are there other auction sites other than ebay for old car parts?

Recommended Posts

I checked it out. Only 2 parts for my 36 Chrysler but hey atleast they were actually something for my car. 56 oldsmobile only returned one page of results. Unfortunately it's not an auction type format either just a regular store. I may persue it for some of my stagnant items.

True, but then again not paying fees for the listing is a whole lot better than eBay's Buy-It-Now charges.

All of the stuff I've ever listed on eBay had no reserve and if it sold it was on the opening bid, so a store format would work just as well for me.

I typed in "1949 olds*" on ecrater and it returned a bunch of junk signs - no parts. I would like to find a true parts auction site without all the fluff and bs that feebay dumps on you.

It seems that any existing auction site is either so greedy or despriate for money - that they will take anything in order to have a listing.

I would rather pay a flat fee of say a buck and have a real person at the auction company limit items to real parts. If I want junk - then I will look at the junk auction sites.

The 13% fee is on the whole purchase. It is an hard work to get sellers to charge realistic shipping fees and pay Ebay for the privilege of selling.

I've got one! I too have been upset with eBay and Craigslist so I created my own website for all types of collectibles. I mainly deal with sports memorabilia, antiques, and on occasions vintage car parts. I’m having trouble finding dealers that want to sell on my site because there isn’t as much traffic as other sites. However, I’m willing to let any seller from these boards sell for free on my site as long as you help promote it.

I took the craigslist and eBay models and put them together. So you can sell for free but have all of the features and functions of eBay with no spam. Classified Ads, Auctions, Buy It Now, Open a store, feedback, etc…

Please contact me if you’re interested in selling on my site. I spent over $5000 with various companies to have better placement on Google.

I have to admit it didn't take long for craigslist to take quite a chunk out of ebay and I think it has them running scared. Just think you get 5 or 6 more sites with the craigslist format of free posting, ebays auction format(with no listing fee), and cater to specific subjects. Basically some one needs to make one specifically for classic cars and parts and market the **** out of it. Like the roman empire eventually ebay will become to big and greedy then it will crumble. Who is gonna be there with the idea that takes its place?????

Well, if it's any solice, Ebay is gradually losing it's flare for fun and possible good deal's in an auction. The amount of greed showing up with the BIN's and cheap knock-off's from the store's is dictating their fate. Sorry for the legitimate auction seller, who is increasingly getting lost among all the other crap.

Hemmings tried to get in to the online parts and cars business but they don't seem to publicizes it and it has not taken off. They pushed it out of testing about a year ago.

I always look at both before bidding. There have been times that I wouldn't bid because the shipping was an insult.

I buy parts on ebay ... i don't like the site ... don't like the fees. But what are you going to do? Where else can I go, that has as many listings?

Good topic ... lots of interesting ideas ... I believe that no one outfit can go it alone ... Hemmings ... or AACA .. or anyone else ... If there was a concerted effort, maybe spearheaded by the AACA or some other group, to gather all like minded associations together to make or use a certain site ... that might work.

There is not only the old car hobby ... anything in the motorized vintage categories would work ... antique snowmobiles, motorcycles ... etc. Every group has their specialized web site etc ... but if you gather all these sites to promote one site for the vintage crowd ... I think we might have a winner!

Ebay or changes to ebay is not the answer. It is a virtual monopoly ... and we all know how that works out. The only advantage to sell on ebay versus another site, is that most everyone knows about ebay, whereas not many would know about a competitive site ... unless we as a hobby group, actively promote such a site in our magazines, forums etc..

food for thought.

Boy, I hear you loud & clear on this point. I too have taken a pass on an item rather than be gouged on shipping. I have actually seen shipping charges far in excess of the cost of the item. This is usually the case where the item is small and easily mailed first class in a mailing or letter-size envelope.

It seems this old reliable thread keeps coming back every time someone has a bad experience with Ebay. There is no doubt it is harder to search for items you want, no doubt the fees are higher, and no doubt they favor the commercial sellers over the little guys. That said, they are still the largest and most diverse market in the world for just about anything you can think of by a massive margin. Their available items any day in the Automobilia categories alone dwarf any other form of purchase so as a buyer I am very willing to jump a few hoops to find what I want. I am still able to find reasonably priced items every day and a surprising amount of bargains still pop up if you take time to look. As a seller I am willing to pay the fees and follow the rules because I know I will still come out ahead and make money due to the exposure my items will get. Since I retired my wife and I have started a home Ebay business and have been quite successful. I have found the experience very satisfying since they do cater to sellers with many time saving processes. I only sell auction format and I offer free shipping and one day turnaround on small items and I think that helps my traffic and sell-through.

Regarding ridiculous shipping costs, if you find an item you want and the shipping is too high send a message to the seller and challenge it. Most of the time they will cave and reduce it because at Ebay the customer is always right!

I did get in touch with the seller, and was told tough, then don't bid! I was looking at a universal set of plug wires, and the selling price was $19.95, but the shipping was $29.95! I can understand trying to make up for the hidden fees, but I don't like the idea of being gouged.

You're right, that's ridiculous, also crazy are the guys selling a common-as-dirt Ford or Chevy emblem or hubcap for $300 buy-it-now. The crazy part is that the items just sit there week after week not selling, I often wonder if it is just a scam to generate a tax loss. For something like plug wires Rock Auto or your local NAPA store would probably work better than Ebay.

International customers can blame the new International rates from the USPS for the new higher shipping costs. The USPS just doubled the cost to Canada from 5.00 to 10.00 for small first class items weighing under 13 ounces. I already had one customer complain. I export 1-2 items daily. Since the increase my international sales have dropped 50 percent. I hope the USPS realizes such a large increase is probably going to result in far less international shipping which means less revenue.

Ebay casts a big shadow and it's tough for other websites to grow because of it.

True, but the market is ripe for someone to take a good portion of their business if they are savvy and knowledgeable in web design.

Personally I think a new website for antique and vintage parts will be a instant success. Can also include categories such as "Vintage Paper, Accessories, Materials" Etc... as long as they fall within the automobile industry. Could also have a subcategory for "New" parts say within the past 20 years.

As I've read through our frustrations over the years I have come to the conclusion that there is a very simple solution.

A site with four simple criteria would be ideal, and put a serious dent (pun intended) in the market share of this auction niche:

1.) Simple to register and friendly to navigate without a list of law forms and disclaimers.

2.) Easy to select radio buttons for payment options (including Money Orders). Seller can specifically list the options they accept.

3.) Low fees and no charge for shipping items, as well as the ability to ship international shipping options for the buyers.

4.) Familiar auction layout IE " Purchase it Now" or "Auction Style" with familiar running times for auctions as well as the ability to easily upload photos.

Once someone comes along that can fulfill all of these criteria you will see us all flock in droves....

Just about every Marque show has a flea market as part of it.  Over the past several years most of these have suffered greatly...primarily due to E-Bay.  Now I know most of these shows are only once a year and in today's NOW society it is hard for us to hold on to parts for a year in order to sell at them, but I think it is time to go back to that direction to sell our Marque specific parts.  For our Crosley National, not only do we have the flea market, but our Ohio region runs a trading post where you can bring parts to sell for a small commission.  I look at e-Bay mostly just for fun, but I refuse to buy or sell on it.  I save everything for our National show and the regular parts vendors.

It may be time to dust off the old terminal keyboard...

I built a very successful car website some time ago and had a lot of fun running it and meeting old car nuts that shared the same passions I had! I sold the site when we received a very generous offer and God's timing was right because of some family issues which were getting worse. The sale helped me put family solutions front and center and we are better today because of it!

I think about the site a great deal! Interestingly, we were in the midst of a re-write but they were not interested in it. A feature we were keen to implement was Auctions, we could see the need even back then! I had been telling myself I would do something different ever since the sale, "I climbed that mountain, I don't want to climb it again..". But of course, for years, the thoughts and ideas continue which is why I was lead to this forum posting via a search on Google.

I continue to hear my Family of Car Nuts (You'all) over that Mountain...

Auctions all over the world including ebay charge commission. Here in Zimbabwe the auctioneer charges commission to both the buyer and seller of an item, normally 20% to the seller and 10% to the buyer, plus VAT on the goods and commissions.

I agree that Ebay does not look after the seller and has reversed sales for me with no recourse to arbitration. I had a sale of parts I had in Canada, that was posted to Aussie, it took 3 months by expedited mail to get there. The buyer complained and Ebay reversed the sale. Later when the stuff arrived I was lucky, the buyer paid me again, but PAYPAL again took their commission on the second payment.

I listed my parts on Ebay to get rid of them, as I had no use for them. I was happy to get something for the parts and move them on to a new owner who could appreciate them.

It was only after I had sold these parts, that I found AACA forums and Fordbarn.com. I would rather list my unwanted parts on either of your sites with a negotiable price, than put them on Ebay. I believe in selling or trading parts at reasonable prices, to those who really need and can use them, that is what our hobby for true enthusiasts is about.

There is a buy/sell section on AACA, why not use it for parts that you cannot identify and want to sell.

If you know a part is for a particular make of car, then advertise it under that section, this will make it easier for all of us to use.

If you want to be greedy and get max profit then use EBAY.

I have lots of stuff here I don't need, but shipping kills it, I will only list things that may be in demand.

By the way PAYPAL is not limited to just paying EBAY, you can use it for accepting payments for private transactions, and before you all say EBAY protects you as a seller, REALLY!!

Best regards and thanks for a great site.

Viv.

I've unfortunately never had much luck with the classifieds here. For a car you get some interest if it's unusual and somewhat desirable.  With parts, Usually NOS ones at that for what I think are very reasonable prices with free delivery to Hershey,  all I get is crickets chirping.  That's usually with a span of offering from the early 1930's to 1980 and an offering from most major marques and a few orphans.

The problem is the chance of a guy needing that part and looking here at the same time is slim with all the other options out their for searching.

This is probably the equivalent of spending a day at a local swap meet looking for Pierce arrow parts or going to Hershey for the day to look for Pierce Arrow parts.  The sheer volume isn't here that the other site offers.   Kind of like being back behind the giant center at Hershey.  You just don't get the traffic you do by the big crossing bridge.

A proper "feedback" and "reputation" system would help put eBay back in the game.   But right now I don't know who I'm bidding against... and I have to assume I'm bidding against shill bidders.   Do shill (fake accounts) bidders exist on ebay today.... well I dont' know.   We used to be able to track who was bidding against us thru the "bidder history" and that "tool" has been taken away.   I'm just a hard working guy who is frugal with his money.

Damn I used to be eBay's biggest cheer leader.  No more.

I think EBay should raise their fees a little more. That way swap meets will start to flourish again. EBay to me is taking the fun out of the car restoration hobby. Sitting at home looking for car parts on the computer compared to interacting with people and taking the fun out of looking for that bargain in a basket. I stopped buying on EBay when they became the middle man in the shipping business jacking up the cost of delivery.

Unfortunately I hate to admit it but I don't think swap meets would flourish if ebay raised their fees.  Quite the opposite would happen.  I go to all the swap meets in the area and buy parts to sell on ebay.  Hershey was around 1500 of random,  to many worthless, trinkets.  I would no longer sell if the fees got high enough.  Little fees keep popping up increasing my bottom line every day it seems. (so I would buy little if anything at the bigger local meets)   I wouldn't sell at swap meets.  I don't even have any luck selling NOS parts on here)

I had a huge garage sale a few weeks ago. I set up at one of those big town wide sales,  where there are so many people you can't drive through town (4 years doing it and I'm known as the car parts guy) and I almost and did end up giving stuff away just to move it.  Some of it 30's matched foglights (appletons) for $2 a pair and only one taker.  I wouldn't waste my time on a swap meet,  and try to wholesale it all if I was to get out of the business.  No takers,  I think I would toss it.  (parts are only valuable if someone else needs them)  Otherwise they are more of a liability.  I'm finding that out more and more every day.  I have a big pile of stainless and Annodized NOS GM trim that gets closer and closer to the recycle bin every day.

Those good hauls that yield all the valuable stuff that sells at Hershey or other major meets,(still much won't sell at local meets) are few and far between these days and with the net everyone wants what people are asking but not selling items for on ebay or other related parts sites,  when you try to buy it to resell,  eventhough they haven't cleaned it up, only to discover the item isn't as nice as thought or paid the fees or even figured out the application to yield a percentage of that high asking price.

Looks like that site did not last long.  I run online auctions for estates, etc.  It is not as easy or cheap as some would have you to believe.  For example the biggest provider charges me $300.00 per auction plus 5%.

It is easy to build a bidding site, getting sellers is fairly easy, getting the buyers to find your site, great big deal.  SEO and Google relevance are the hard part. For instance 57.9% of the people coming to this site went to Google first. The key search term is AACA.  There are 1,243 sites linking to AACA.org.  69.1% of the traffic comes from the US, the rest all over the world.  There is a ton of info out there.  This site ranks in the top 45,000 or so sites in the US.

To build a bidding site that would serve the needs that have been expressed here could easily cost $250k-$500k upfront.  Then you have the issues of a method of payment.  I would venture to guess that credit card processing fees would be in the 1%-1 1/2%, then you have web hosting fees, site maintenance fees, server costs, yada, yada.  It ain't easy Ethel.
