Oil level gauge quandary

I am restoring a race engine from the 1920s-30s. Inside the crankcase is the workings for a hydrostatic style oil level gauge which apparently mounted directly on the two ports exiting from the crank case. I realize some Packards from the late 20s/early 30s had a similar gauge, but those seem to have been mounted on some small sheet metal housing. What I am seeking information for is an oil level (not oil pressure) gauge which mounts as described above. Can anyone help??? Also, why do you suppose a race car builder would not have the driver looking at the oil level gauge on the dash, instead down by the crank?
