If it cost him $7,000, I'll bet he was plenty p-o-d when that LF Fender and bumper got mangled...

The spare tire cover looks somewhat familiar...

The step-plates in lieu of running board make me think of cars like Haynes or maybe H-C-S ?

I can't tell - do the hood louvres slant towards the front of the car?

( If so, that should help ID it...)

Definitely not a Locomobile ( Although that's a good guess for a "Large, expensive American car); I think 1920-23 Haynes is a strong candidate.

1920-21 Haynes had bowl-shaped headlights with smaller, similar shaped parking lights mounted right underneath... the mystery car is so-equipped...

Tad Burness' American Carspotter's Guide: 1920-1939 lists the early '22 Haynes still having the bowl-shaped headlights, while the "new" '22s had drum headlights. The 3/4 running -boards and side-mount spare tire were also new for '22...
