Erndog
:confused:I need to remove a starter from a 1940 6 banger. It was all very easy when the engine was out of the car, but now I need to replace the starter drive assembly and it is no longer easy. It seems the top bolt is surrounded by several obsticles and has too little room for a socket wrench. Are there any special tricks to this or do I just need to spend a lot of time sweating it out? Guest Julian
If it is anything like my 42 starter is I used a "long" extension to put my ratchet ahead of the starter itself then back out the bolts. On my 42 the foot starter mechanism was all up in the way..
Erndog
Well, I got it off finally. I had to swing the accelerator linkage out of the way, push in the starter arm, use a short 3/8" drive 5/8" short socket for clearance, flex joint, adapter to 1/2" drive and several extensions. The bottom bolt was much easier. The end justifies the means in some cases.
