Dwight Romberger
Hi all,I purchased this 1948 chevy pickup front axle. Can anyone tell me what the shock absorber mounted behind the front axle is for? Is it a steering stabilizer? Should I use it?ThanksDwight
Guest Silverghost
That's exactly what it is if it is a shock !Still used today on modern pick-up trucks .I can't see too much detail in the photo. Is it bolted on : or are the mounting brackets welded on ? I am not sure ~But I think it is a later aftermarket add-on ?
Dwight Romberger
Thanks. It certainly looks like a shock. It's bolted on. I will try to upload a better picture tommorrow.Dwight
Guest Oldengineer
The big Jeeps had these in the 60's - I believe its purpose is to damp out steering shimmy.Regards:Oldengineer
mrspeedyt
my '73 sub 4x4 has one.... it was shot and the front end would sometimes shimmy badly... replaced it and enjoy no shimmy ever since!
