64R
Does anyone know what the rearend gear possibilities are for a 64? I'm rebuilding the motor so before sorting out the cam specs I should figure it out, I'll jack it up and give it a spin so I should be close, just nice to know what I'm looking for. Thanks
Lapham3
Usually 3.07-sometimes 3.23 rarely 3.42 almost never 3.91 once in ten lifetimes 4.
64R
Thanks, I would guess it's the 3.07 by driving it, possibly 3.23 but certianly not taller, I just had no idea what possibilities there were for it. I'll do the spin and count to be sure.
RivNut
The ratio is stamped on the bottom of the axle housing with two numbers - one above the other. Example: 3 over 2 is 3.23; or 2 over 78 is 2.78. Ratios available for '64 (all models): 3.07; 3.23; 3.42. An X in a circle identifies it as a posi. As stated earlier, chances are its a 3.07 or 3.23. I don't know if the transmissions were coded for rear end gears in '64. They were in '65. B is the first letter for all 400's. The second letter identifies either the engine, the shifter (column or console), or perhaps the rear gear as well. The transmission tag is on the passengers side. Painted and stamped with year and code.Ed
