I am in the resto of my car,1965 , and I am wondering about new glass for the vent -side and rear side glass. Any one out there ever had new glass cut for their car ? Does anyone have a recommendation on a quality glass shop in or around the Minneapolis / St Paul MN area that does that kind of work ? I would really not want to pay for shipping on glass / Heavy / plus the breakage factor ! There sure is alot to think about when putting a Full Size Model back together... pyntre Posted August 21, 2010 Author Share Posted August 21, 2010 I just talked to one of the major glass suppliers that advertise in Hemmings , He told me that the vent and rear quarter glass is flat but that the door glass is curved and maybe different on 65 than on 63 /64 as it has holes at the bottom for mounting it to the regulator. I know French Lake has about a half dozen 63-65's laying around. I think I may have some in the shed and Tim McClusky or his brother should have some also. Is yours clear or tinted? RivNut Posted August 21, 2010 Share Posted August 21, 2010 All six pieces of side glass on the first generation Rivieras are flat as a flittler. The only curve to any of these pieces is at the top of the door glass that goes along with the roof line. (Picture in the lower right corner.)The '65 may have the bolt on glass rather than the pressed in glass, you can tell this by removing one of the door skins. None of this should be a problem for a good glass man. Find out who the local rodders and custom car guys use in your neighborhood to do the glass on their cars; he can do yours for you. Here are some pictures of my under restoration '64 taken with my trusty carpenter's square. Do yourself a favor; stick with the comments from the guys whose passion is their car and know them well, not some guy who knows a little about a lot of cars. My car came out of the high desert of southern Colorado and maybe lived through a few sandstorms in its day. I have looked into polishing the glass but have found thats not really as easy as it sounds ! So my next step is replacing the glass ,hence my original question on this topic . I have all the glass out of the car presently and did lay a level across it and it does seem Flat . Maybe not NASA flat, but flat enough for what we are talking about. I did do some more calling around and found a small company in Ham Lake Mn. that said they can do the cutting with my windows as templates , and have the ability to drill the required holes for the regulator. Now, I'm also looking for a OE Soft-Ray tint Driver's side Rear Qtr window for my '65 w/ power windows. Found the one in the photo from a '64 Riv. So my question is -will this be an exact fit for the '65 too, or was the '65 side glass (OR FRAME?) different from '64?What's this I hear about a regulator & holes -in/on which window/s? -Is it a height regulator? pyntre Posted August 22, 2010 Author Share Posted August 22, 2010 The rear quarter glass is Set in its frame ,same as the vent window glass and the door glass on my 65 is held to the window regulator with 4 small bolts that go through the bottom edge of the glass , holes through the glass. I don't know if 63 /64 Rivs are the same or not ....Take lots of pictures and mark where everything goes / is attached to what inside the doors if you take it all apart , sorta complex to just FIGURE OUT... The 63/64 door glass is mounted like the quarter glass and the vent window glass.Besides taking a bunch of pictures (lots easier now in the era of digital photography) a wise move is to get a chassis manual for yourself for your particular car. I remember when you could get some NOS tempered glass for these cars.I do have access to a new clear door glass PPG manufactured for $175 + UPs. It's not in our inventory and unfortunately it is clear but it is for the 65 Riviera. It has 4 holes tempered- Glass Part# DT4469.I think we sell the windshields for less money.FYI: We have some late 60's side glass NOS if anyone can use at a good price.Richard Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Guest Gee_Rydes Posted September 1, 2010 Share Posted September 1, 2010 Sanders quoted me basically $100 for qtr and vent combined, $100 for door glass and $460 for rear.So, $200 per side for the flat stuff.That was tinted and tempered but no OEM stampings.Got feedback from one of the Riviera glass purchasers (there were only 2) from the eBay guy and he said it was a nightmare. Glass was not tempered, just laminated. Also said the leading edge of the door glass was curved and he had water leaks. I followed up with Sanders this morning and was given the same info as GEE RYDES stated in the previous post. I was impressed that the company knew right away that there was a differance between 63 64 and 65 window glass with the holes. Lots of options as far as tint and color and if you read their website it seems to me this isn't their first BBQ .I will be sending my business their way .... The MSRA guys use a couple of glass places locally, some of them offer "LOF" date coding for the glass. One of the business's mentioned is Lakeland Motors Glass Shop in Ham Lake, 763-755-6497. They date code, polish the edges, set them in the frames and install if you would like that too.I've actually had good luck with Auto Glass Specialists, "the guys in the little red trucks".The glass is different from a 63 to 65. I found that out from installing a drivers side window glass into my 63! If I remember right, the 63 uses an aluminum window run channel/flange and the 65 uses a stamped steel one. They will bolt onto the regulator, but the 65 window sticks up about a 1/4 to 3/8th of an inch above the chrome molding on the door if installed in a 63. They have been remanufactured tempered.Sheldon is a good person to deal with at lakeland Motors in MN. We have sold to most companies out there over the years (actually decades).
