Wow, that is impressive. So is that a power wash or just good old elbow grease?

Bob, what did you use and how,  to get that great result?

Rodney, thank you for the compliment. I had engine work performed and I said while you have the engine apart go ahead and paint the engine and the engine bay. The attention to detail on the fittings were shined with a dremel tool and an abrasive attachment jewelers use. I’ll send a pick of the abrasive in a pm. I keep the bay wiped down and clean by first blowing all the debris out. Then I vacuum the engine. Next I use a degreaser and brush the crevices. I rinse with just a damp rag. I dress the hoses with a Meguires product for black rubber, etc. The phrase “soap and water take ..... a long way” is saying used for a little self deprecation indicating when I or something I have is clean it is a major improvement over the norm. Since this pic was taken I purchase one of those fake Delco battery topper to make my battery look brand and period correct. I was surprised how much I had jiggle and place the battery to get the hood ( bonnet?) to close.

BTW, I have added yet another kill switch in addition to the one in the ashtray. No pics or telling where the second switch is hiding. I’ve sent the clock off for a quartz update. My belief is car clocks n e v e r were reliable with the original movement. Some have said all I had to do was clean the clock and I’d be back in business. I decided to have some else do the work. I just finished treating the undercarriage of the car with a rust preventer known as POR 15. I used a brush for first coating of the preventer, then used a POR 15 Topcoat aerolsol spray. In hindsight I would done better job AND faster had I purchased the special spray gun with hoses that reach inside the channel and bulk purchase of the preventer. Now I’m trying to get the speedometer casing at the speedometer end to stop leaking fluid. Seems as though to get a vintage car in good condition takes time, work, and for me a significant amount of money.Stay well RRB

Thought I would post a few pics of my 65 GS project - started with a true barn find three years ago . Have been through two previous so called "experts " from which I had to pull the car - long story , lessons learned, dollars spent  but finally have a great guy doing a nice job with ETA of about 3-4 months . Changed the color  from verde green to burgundy with black custom interior to come . Will post more pics as they come available .

Outstanding show car level restoration. My friends in this area would say, “ A person must have deep pockets and long arms for that job”. Over the top presentation of automobile industrial art.

The Aqua Zephyr at the Goodguy's North Carolina Nationals Car Show, Raleigh, NC April 27-29, 2018.

This is the overflow indoor display area. There is another building with about 75 cars in it. There are several hundred cars setup outside. Great show!

No award for The Aqua Zephyr at the Goodguy's North Carolina Nationals Car Show this weekend. The competition was intense. So many awesome cars. They did hand out nice tin participation plaques to the non-winners though. Nice touch @goodguysrodandcustom! We had a great time and we are seriously considering signing up for the October show in Charlotte.

Happy Birthday to our 1968 Buick Riviera, The Aqua Zephyr. She was built exactly 50 years ago this week, during the second week of May, 1968. She began life at the Euclid Fisher Body plant in Cleveland, Ohio and had her final assembly at the Flint, Michigan Buick assembly plant, along with the 49,284 other Buick Riviera's built that year.

I want to share a few pictures of a 1964 Riviera that was at the Raleigh, NC Goodguy's show recently. I know the owners name is Chuck and he is from also from Fayetteville, NC. I hope to run into him again soon. This is an outstanding car!

What did you notice in the way of inconsistencies in the car from stock other than the wheels and fiinned aluminum goodies under the hood?

To be honest, I'm not a purist about mine or others cars so I don't normally look for inaccuracies. Plus I am so new at classic Buick ownership that I would not notice such things as you have pointed out, Ed. As I have said before, to each his/her own. If the owner wanted to have Cadillac hubcaps and a Ford Falcon steering wheel, so be it, if it makes them happy.

Not really. Besides what I mentioned, the one item that really caught my eye was the wood veneer on the console where it should be black vinyl.  The car has a standard interior, not a custom interior. Or, the owner decided he didn't like the wood veneer on the door panels with the full length arm rests and swapped those out.

Black vinyl was standard for both standard and custom in '63,  but came on the standard interior in '64.

Here's a picture of a couple of  '64's with the standard interior and correct console treatment.  The second picture gives you better detail because you can also see the standard door panels.

This picture shows a '63 with the custom interior (full length arm rest with wood veneer door panels) with the black vinyl on the console

And a picture of a '63 with standard interior and the black vinyl on the console.  Door panels have no wood and a short armrest.

Thanks for the info. I learn something every day reading this forum, just wish I remember it all.

You know you get tested on all this at the end of the year ??????

Nah just kidding, I love the way the keen eyes of experience pick up on the inconsistancies in the details.  Especially when a seller tries to pass it off as “all original”.

And you are right in that we learn something new every day!

Todays goal is to do the same for the '95 ...

That one is a Kwik Lift https://www.kwik-lift.com rated at 5000 pounds. I also have a Snap On midrise scissors lift. A friend of mine bought a Kwik Lift about two years ago and has been telling me how wonderful it is every Tuesday night when we meet for coffee. The scissors lift is good for working around the perimeter of the car.

022.JPG.1e32fc843de1e8d2492e812d4ff581dc.JPG

But I don't like the idea of getting any of my appendages between those cross arms. AND I will now have full access when I need it.

The Kwik Lift is an incline ramp that you drive on and then use a floor jack to level off and lower the rear supports. It is only 20", but unnerving the first time. I got half way up and then got my son to come out. I told him "Just come out. You don't have to do anything or stay long. He said "Yeah, I know, just call 911 if something happens". Perceptive.

My friend got his used after the first owner tried to drive on with the optional casts in place. It went through his garage wall. I think he paid $600 for it and drove about 150 miles one way to get it. I bought mine used for $1,000 8 miles from my house with a few extras included. That $600 to $1000 seems to be the used rate across the country.

Oh, second time up is much easier.

Here's a couple pics of my console after I replaced the wood veneers, had the shifter bezel rechromed and put LED in the transmission indicator. Big thanks to such great work by Bob Scanlan in Mass. who does the veneers, he's on eBay if anyone needs them too.

That's an eBay steering wheel too. I love the original wood wheels but those are to $$$ for me. This is fine for me, I'm not that picky.

I just picked up an APR 64-dated color slide of a Riviera. I wanted to ask the forum to correctly ID the year of Riviera for me, 63 or 64?

I will also let the experts decide the color and style of wheel covers.

The picture is as color corrected as I can make it.

Good luck!

You can only tell for sure by looking at shots of the hood emblem or the rear end (trunk lettering and tail lights), but if the car in the photo has not been tampered with, it's a 63.  In 63, the space between the vanes on the cast covers was natural aluminum; in 64 that space would have been painted black.

We took The Aqua Zephyr to the Airborne and Special Operations Museum in Fayetteville, NC this Memorial Day weekend.  See their website here: https://www.asomf.org/

The "Field of Honor" had several hundred US flags on display on the grounds of the museum.

We are very humbled to work at Fort Bragg, NC as US Army civilians and to be surrounded by our brave men and women of our Armed Forces every day.

My lovely wife always practical thought $999.00 for the chrome Dinsmore compass was not a good investment. Other compasses online for sale were less expensive, but still too $ for me. I thought the Riverside from Montgomery Ward made by Airway in Mexico Indiana was a good deal. The Airway set me back $32.50 to include shipping. I had some Grenada Red touch up paint so I made an effort to paint the compass to match the interior. The compass finishes my extra add on for the Red Riviera.
