Yup, Roger that. A big thanks to all concerned, especially the the folks that located the 27A class on the shady side of the street, in a cool breeze, and in front of nice shops with shade awnings to sit under. Seriously, many thanks to everyone that donated thier time and efforts to make it a truly great show. The local New Bernians are among the most pleasant and courteous folks I've had the pleasure to meet...........Bob

Just got back from New Bern what a great meet I couldn't beleive they blocked off the whole town for this event. Great job done by First capital and all others involved.

I felt honored that Wayne Burgess took time to look me up to say hi (thanks Wayne)

I second the comment by Bhigdog about the the New Bernians being very outgoing friendly people. I hope every had a safe trip home.

Hey Bill, Did We share a pit stop together this AM along I-95, with a brief conversation about the meet?..........Bob

Bill and I were there also. :)

I was Team Captain for the team doing classes 27c and 27d. I went around early to check on who was there. One of the owners asked my name and I told him "Susan". "Linden?" he asked. Turns out it was none other than Quadfins from here on the forums!!! It was great to meet another forum member.

Bill and I drove over to the host hotel and as we drove into the lot there was Pat Thorpe and his dad Nelson polishing the fire truck and all that gear that goes on it. Later I will post some photos of it. I haven't downloaded them yet. :o

We rolled into the driveway at 8:05pm, a long trip with a heavy load, but I am truly honored to have accomplished what we did this weekend.

Before, during and after the restoration my dad and I have worked hard on that truck, and we've done something that very few have ever done with a fire truck. I guess what makes it even more rewarding is to know that the guys from the Canandaigua Fire Department had given up on that old truck, and we've proven to them that with a little determination and some hard work, you can accomplish anything. We've taught those guys a lesson about not giving up.

New Bern's 300th Anniversary,

AACA's 75th Anniversary,

and we become the first fire truck in western New York ever to win a Senior AGNM!!

With New Bern's history with AACA, I don't think I could've won that award in a better place. Now the next meet is in Canandaigua, and we're able to bring the truck back to its' hometown with all of the awards. The locals will be able to see what the truck has been, while a lot of people can visit my stomping grounds.

As for the meet, I had heard so many things from so many about how nice New Bern is, and we found out that it is true. My mother has never had any interest in going to these meets, she had heard about New Bern, and she's already said that if they have another meet there that we're going back.

To Marshall VanWinkle and Zach Simmons:

Thank you for a wonderfull event!! In less than three weeks it'll be our turn in the barrell and I hope we can measure up to what you've done.

AACA Meets and Tours 2010 - AACA PHOTO GALLERY

The New Bern Photo Gallery is up guys. Add as you wish. I will get mine in tomorrow hopefully.

Really great seeing everyone, Pat, Bill, Susan, Pedro, Ron Green, Charlie, Steve B,and on and on. What a great meet! I took about 200 pictures before my legs gave out.

A side story: I delivered an antique table from Texas to our first leaders, the Bonds, but managed to pick up a trophy for another friend in Virginia, and also ended up buying a beautiful Oriental Screen in an antique shop right in the middle of the Meet's blocked streets for Gloria. As you would guess I had to wait for the streets to clear of antique cars before I could collect the booty! :)

Wow, how convenient, display your antique cars and shop on the same street. I think we're on to something here guys.:)

Congratulations Pat and his dad, Nelson.

Speaking of Zach Simmons, he was a knight in shining armor to the wife of one of the car owners in one of the classes I was judging. When she began to feel faint her husband asked me if it would be possible to have a golf cart take her back to the host hotel. Within just a few minutes Zack had collected the lady that was not feeling well and was on his way to return her to her hotel. Thanks Zach. That couple will never forget you. :)

For the few of you who I saw in New Bern, it was great seeing you again. For those who I missed, Sorry but it was a full weekend for me. I enjoyed the show, but plan on never again going to a show with only 2 hours of sleep before the show. Hope to see some more of you in 3 weeks in Canandaigua.

Well, I got to the forum as quick as I could - Susan and I got in very late last night. We blew an oil presure line on the MG a few miles north of New Bern. Managed to park it is a safe covered place (old gas station), then we drove home in the van (1912 Triumph inside) We hooked up the truck and trailer and went back to fetch the MG and finally got home around midnight. It was a long day but this is what makes great adventures and stories later. It's an easy fix but we've got a mess under the bonnet (hood) to clean up.

What a fantastic weekend it was in New Bern. The best cars and best people in the best possible location! The hospitality was great! I think we set a new record for an awards banquet also. Like has been said before, there wasn't enough time to stop and visit with everyone, and I know I missed seeing the Lindens and many others.

Add my congratulations to Marshall and Zack and all the club members in those bright shirts who helped to make the weekend so great. You can all be proud!

Terry & Susan

Yes Bob that was me, nice to have meet you, are you going to the 75th meet the end of June?

Bill

No, I won't make that one, Bill. I always have a conflicting event over the 4th of July. I will be taking my 1939 Chevy PU to the Canandaigua meet in Early June.............Bob

Well I'm excited. I pulled my Studebaker out of the Northeast Classic Car Museum where it has been staying and tried to clean it up for the show. I did my best, but understand that many cars in a museum are not good enough for your average Grand National Show. The judges did their thing and I got to wander a bit, visiting with old friends and making new ones and thanking God and Duryea that I no longer have to compete in Class 27B. Wow! We were loaded up and truckin' by 3:30 in the afternoon and drove North not knowing how the Stude had faired. Home at 3:30 Sunday morning, I was too tired to worry about it. I put the car back in the display this morning, still wondering what happened and kept checking for results. Finally. I'm excited! When can I register for Moline?

First of all, Congratulations and Thank You to the First Capital Chapter, it's members and all who put in so much time and effort into the 2010 Grand National Event. Special thanks to Marshall VanWinkle. It was nice to meet you Thursday evening when I arrived at the host hotel. Also many Thanks to the Judges that gave of their time at this event. There might have been fewer of you than normal but you did a GREAT job of getting your work done in a timely, professional and friendly manner. This is one event that many of us will not soon forget.

The town of New Bern, it's residents and businesses were truly outstanding hosts to all AACA Members who were fortunate enough to be able to attend. The friendliness and warmth the people of New Bern exhibited to myself and all the AACA members I spoke with speaks very well of the town and it's residents.

It was so very nice to see some old friends and meet some new ones during this meet. Speaking of new friends I met Pat Thorpe and his Dad Wayne. See you gentlemen in a few weeks at Canandaigua! Also got to meet Pete Degroff and his Dad from Rochester, NY and spend the day on Saturday as next door neighbors at the car show. Met and had dinner Friday evening with Mr. & Mrs. Robert Bond from Philly and the "other" Bob. That ice cream sure tasted good after our walk around town. Thanks for snapping my photo at the awards banquet!

It was also great to chat with Peter H. and Wayne from the forums at various times over the weekend. Also had time to chat with fellow Pennsylvanian and Volkswagen owner Peter Burgess and his wife. Sorry I missed seeing some other DF members (Susan L., Dick G. and many others). Apologies to West P. Seems every time I saw you over the weekend you were busy working or chatting with people. Hope to see you all at Canandaigua.

As usual Steve M. was one BUSY man every time I saw him. Nice to be able to say hello on Sunday morning when I was checking out. I see you are an early riser as well.

Once again Congratulations on a Very Successful and Enjoyable Meet. It was great to see some old friends and meet some new ones.

With some Luck, Rest and Time I will get the photos I took at the Show out of my camera and posted.

Grand National-New Bern-2010 - AACA PHOTO GALLERY

Ok guys, every picture that I took is uploaded above. I was really disappointed in some that I took. I keep blaming them on my cheap camera, but I think the heat had a little something to do with it. The photographer was gragging (??), DRAGGING, at times. There were many great background opportunity shots that I would have loved to have taken, if time had permitted.

Speaking of my antique store girl again. She was very willing to wait even later than her usual 5pm closing time. Supporting other town comments here, I believe that New Bern store keepers know a good thing when they see it. New Bern, a great place to visit.

"Ya'll come back now, Ya HEAR???":)

See, Steve! I told you I was working!

Charlie, I was not moving around very well due to a bum leg, so I didn't get a chance to see as many people as I wanted. Plus, my marked off photo-shoot area was taken away from me by Mr. Mitchell, the hardware store owner. This made it difficult to pull cars out for feature photography. I got a few nice ones though, and I'm excited to get them featured in the magazine soon.

I saw your VW. Congratulations on the Senior Grand National Award!!

As a resident of New Bern all I can say is thank you all for coming. It was great to see so many beautiful cars in one spot. I have heard nothing but positive feedback from residents about the show and the folks who came with their cars. On the radio this morning they were talking about how Sunday afternoon you would never have known there were so many cars, people and trailers downtown. No mess left afterwards and nothing destroyed. I just hope you all can come back and do it again real soon!

Thanks,

Rich

thank you for your hospitality! During the weekend as Susan and I walked around town we met a lot of New Bern folks and every one of them stopped and asked if we were part of the old car club. They all told us how appreciated we were for bring the cars and having this (and past) events in New Bern. It's a great place and folks like you make it so.

We'll be back - all you gotta do is get Zack and Marshall to say "Car-Show!"

We also had a great time and echo all the positive comments regarding the meet and how it was organized and run by the First Capital Chapter Region.

On a side note: having arrived on Thursday and telling numerous people Saturday morning prior to leaving for the show that it was hard to believe we had not seen one single boat in the surrounding waters, we got stuck in route to the show as they opened the draw bridge to let a bunch of boats through. Put our 2 cars into the show at 9:45, somewhat close to the 10:00 start of judging.

This post speaks volumes for the high integrity of the AACA. I would rather hear how we left the town positively than anything else. I enjoyed the meet so much. New Bern is my all time favorite show venue. I have attended all five meets there dating back to the first in 1994. The honor is ours sir.

AMEN!!!

My mom doesn't care to go to these meets, and even she was hooked. She's even decided to go to Louisville, so there may be hope for her yet.:D:D:D

I'd also like to give a big thank you to Ron Green. My dad and I worked hard on getting that truck ready, and thanks to Ron, he made our life a whole lot easier. Ron lent us a car cover that was big enough to cover our fire truck, so we were able to get most of the waxing done on Friday. Had he not done that, we most likely wouldn't have had time to get the truck ready in time for judging. In Topeka we couldn't start waxing until the sun burned the dew off, and by having the car cover, the dew wasn't there, so it gave us more time to get things ready.

I'd also like to thank Wayne Burgess. We no sooner pulled into New Bern and Wayne was right there. He helped us get turned around, took us out to the trailer parking, and gave us a ride back to our hotel.

I also was blessed to spend some time with Terry & Susan Bond to talk about our upcoming meet in Canandaigua. I think we're in good shape, and hopefully they'll leave our meet just as happy.

Wow!!! There is no way to improve on the previous comments, great meet great folks and just a fantastic show. I ran in to problems getting two cars on the field making the judges school and morning b/fast and catching up with my team, but some how got all the important stuff done. I trailerd the wifes Chevelle in an inclosed trailer and my Buick in a open. Fools rush in, never again will I trailer two cars at the same time. The wife rec. her first G.N. and my Buick rec. a underserved third. It was so filthy and clutered I was ashamed to put it in the show. Due to the great response of extra cars judgeing had to be moved up an hr. and I had no time to do more than park it. To the guys that judged it, Thanks for being a little understanding.

To Bob Andrews?? I think, and Zachary Simons, two special guys that found my wifes purse and guarded like fort knox, Bless you, thank you. I have more to say, but must go to work, so if time permits I will come back latter and give a short class on how NOT to go to a car show. To the folks in New Bern, thanks for starting this Damm yankees show season with a bang.:):)

Charlie said it well! Ditto...wonderful people. Sunday morning I barely knew my name so you will have to excuse me as I was working on little sleep!

Thanks Steve. Understandable about Sunday morning. Long Drive to get there + Friday Full of Activities + Long Day on the Show Field on Saturday + Nice Banquet Saturday Night = TIRED on Sunday Morning.

See, Steve! I told you I was working!

Yes Steve, I did see West working on Saturday. Sorry to hear you had a bum leg West. Given your schedule at the meet, the bum leg and losing your photo-shoot area you no doubt had some challenges to deal with. Thanks for the Congrats. Hard to believe my VW is 30 years old.

Rich, you are very welcome. The City of New Bern and it's residents deserve a BIG "Thank You" as well for being such gracious hosts.

This was the first time I had been to New Bern. After I heard/read so much positive feedback about the city from people who attended AACA Meets there in the past, it was an easy decision to attend. Hopefully, sometime in the future, the First Capital Chapter Region will decide to put on another AACA Meet in New Bern.

On a side note: having arrived on Thursday and telling numerous people Saturday morning prior to leaving for the show that it was hard to believe we had not seen one single boat in the surrounding waters, we got stuck in route to the show as they opened the draw bridge to let a bunch of boats through. Ron, when I came into the city I noticed the draw bridge and wondered what would happen if it had an opening on Saturday morning. I guess we know now what does happen. Glad that the bridge opening still gave you enough time to get to your spot on the show field.

:):) Heads up class todays lesson is how NOT to do National (or any outher trip).. With two cars, I borrrowed my nephews truck and trl. and a second trl. from a good friend. With both cars loaded we left early thursday for a easy 600 mile drive to New Bern. About a hundred miles out a bracket that holds the trl. fender in place broke and cut the tire. I got out my jack to change the tire and thats when I learned my lug wrench did not fit the trl. wheels.:( A quick ph. call to 911 brought a state police officer and better yet a 4way lug wrench. In just a few mins. we where on our way again with directions to a local truck shop where I MIGHT have the fender welded. I had used two bungee courds to keep the fender in place untill reaching the t/shop and thats where I learned although they had a welder the man that run it was not going to leave his warm and cozy supper table till morning. About this time my stepson informed me that his mom bought every bungee courd in the place:o Forward HO. on the road with the fender VARY well straped in place we once more started for New Bern. The rest of the trip in was uneventful and we enjoyed a excellent meet. We did not attend the banquit as I had early Monday appointments and needed to be home early, so we loaded and left for home as soon as the show was over. Here comes lesson # two, about two hrs. out on that peacefull (should I say lovely) I 95 my nephews truck quit. Have you ever sit on I 95 on the shoulder? The speed limit is 70, so everyone drives 80-85mph,and then you have the occaseual speeder. I grabed my trusty set of emergancy flairs and starting about 300 yards in back of the truck, placed them to warn traffic and move them over a lane. So help me they ran right over my flairs. A quick call to 911 and 3hrs. later a nice policeman and a wrecker from the beverly h/billys with I think Jethro driving arrived to get me off the h/way. I wont give you the name of the cross roads where they took me, Ill just ask, did you see the movie Deliverance??:eek:

Well class, the rest of this story is a real nightmare you probably wouldnt believe,so lets just say $850. later all are home safe and happy, see you in Canandaigua.:D

jamer, You had a trip home like we did. :(

Just short of the Rocky Gap, Va. exit the RV started a minor vibration. Bill looks at me and says, "I hope that is just the road". My reply, "Yeah, I hope so too". Then there was a HUGE BOOM!!!, the RV started to shake like it was driving down some old railroad bed with the ties still in the ground and we headed for the berm. A brief inspection showed that the inner rear dually tire on the driver's side had had a catastrophic failure. All of the tread was gone (strewn down the highway) and it had split from sidewall to sidewall with the steel belts sticking out.

Luckily for us we knew that there was a Methodist church with a large lot just off of the exit ramp. Our friend, and fellow AACA judge Rodger Woodrum, lives just a short way up the road from that exit. We called our new road service and then we called Rodger. He had been mowing on his farm but when he got the Voice-Mail message he called and then headed down to help if he could. He came dressed to work. :) Not long after he got there the mechanic from the T A of America truck stop showed up and took the destroyed tire off and put it in the rack where the spare came from, put the spare on and did a great job. But it was nice to have Rodger there for moral support.

The tire coming apart did some damage. It shifted the fuel filler tube, broke the connection that holds the exhaust pipe in place, busted the floor out of the storage bay near the fuel filler tube and broke the "grey water" tank at the connection. Good thing it wasn't the "Black Lagoon" tank.

We said our goodbyes to Rodger and a Korean college student, "David", that is staying with him while he waits for the summer semester to start at Concord University. Rather than get home at 6 we got home at about 11. Tired but safe. It could have been so much worse.

Six new tires are on order along with new tires for the tow dolly. **Cha Ching". And the insurance is going to cover all the damage done to the RV with no deductable. **Whew!!** :)

Our trip to New Bern was smooth. The only glitch was where Garmin sent us down through all of the narrow two-lane roads and jerk towns from Rocky Mount to New Bern. Once we got to New Bern, we had dinner with Steve & Pam Heald, and found out they had a Garmin and it sent them the same strange way.

Our bad trip occurred last year going to Topeka. We blew a tire on the trailer near Dayton, Ohio, we put on the spare and the spare was flat, we hunted for a place that sold trailer tires, and when we found a place, we had an accident where the trailer caught a parked car. On the way home from Topeka, when we got to the Pennsylvania/New York border we pulled in for our last fuel stop, and when I got out of the truck and I smelled what I thought was burning brakes. We walked around the trailer and found where a wheel bearing had failed. We continued gassing up the truck, and when we pulled away from the pumps to address the wheel bearing, the tire came completely off the trailer. We got the trailer off of to the side, we jacked up the axle, chained it up with a log chain, and drove the rest of the way home with a fire truck on a trailer with 5 wheels.

When we got home, we got the fire truck off, backed the trailer into the shop and pulled all of the wheels and wheel bearings and checked everything out. as fate had it, the middle wheel bearing on the passenger side of the trailer was also in bad shape, but hadn't yet failed. We bought new bearings, replaced the missing brake lining, put the trailer back together and took the trailer back to the guy we borrowed it from.

The repairs cost us $700. It is a lot, but the guy wouldn't take any rent for it, we couldn't own the trailer for that price, and he let us use it again to take the truck to New Bern. We gave him the receipts not to get money out of him, but at least it gives him the part numbers of everything we put into the trailer, and he knows exactly what we did to the trailer.

Everyone gets those trips from hell. The important thing is that no one got hurt, and it re-enforces your memory to do things safe and be carefull during your trips.

Mine sent me the same way. At first I was in WTF mode but the further along I got the more I enjoyed it. Lots more interesting than another 100 mile of booooring interstate. In fact I let it take me back the same way. At 07 early on Sunday we were pretty much the only ones on the road through mist shrouded farm country. Kinda nice. If you go to the parameters section of your GPS you can program it to send you most direct, shortest time, most scenic, no tolls etc etc. I believe that route was most direct/shortest..............Bob

ex98thdrill, looks like you and I both have the same Garmin map software in our GPS units. I came down the Eastern Shore of Md which put me in Norfolk, VA. Once I got around Norfolk I got onto Route 17. At one point on that road the GPS started "recalculating" every 10-15 seconds and told me to take various exits. At one point I listened to it and ended up on a couple NARROW roads. As luck would have it, I came across a couple of Ford P/Us at various times with their mirrors extended out. They must have been towing their imaginary trailers because I saw no trailers behind them. Wish I had a $1 for every Ford P/U I see that drives like this. Anyway, they realized I had no where to go and got off the side of the road for me.

On my return trip home the GPS went nuts again on the same stretch of road. This time I told my GPS (it has the female voice) to be quiet and stop nagging me :) and stayed on the road I was on.

Before your meet I have to check and see of there is a later version of the Garmin Map Software that I can download for my GPS.

Sorry to see others had problems with their trailers and RVs. Glad to see everyone made it home safely. Hopefully others will learn from your experiences and give their rigs a good look see before each time they depart to/from an AACA event (especially the longer distance ones like Louisville).

Charlie,

Save your money. My parents had their garmin updated after the bypass around Lawrenceville, PA was built, they paid almost $100, and it still didn't show the changes that pertained to that road. If you're coming up through the south, follow the directions that I put on our thread and leave the GPS off. GPS will most likely send you down Lakeshore Drive. Lakeshore Drive is a more direct route, but that road has a narrow lane, with high curb. Stay on Rtes 5&20 and turn down 364. You won't go wrong by going this way.

We've worked with Garmin and Tom-Tom and both GPS units will send you to Hershey Via Syracuse. It'll cost you more money in gas, it'll cost you in tolls, and to me it isn't worth it.

We got a Garmin Nuvi 255 last year about this time. Bill just ordered a different version today. It will be here for the trip to Louisville. It has the lifetime map updates (four times per year). We also picked the female voice (American English "Samantha") and she nags Bill all the time. I am waiting for her to say, "Why do I bother with you? You never listen to me anyway!" :D

Just so everyone knows, we never leave home on a trip that Bill has not done a detailed check of the fluids, tires, etc. of the RV and the PT (or the Dodge truck and the trailer if that is what we are taking). I had mentioned to him the thread that was on here a few months ago about RV tires and the issues with them. The tires looked okay when he checked them. In ordering the new ones the dealer was told they better be new ones, we don't want old ones that have been sitting around under who knows what conditions.
