Manifold Paint Question

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

Hope someone can give me some input. I've attached a picture of my engine and have purchased some engine paint. Would I be okay just wire brushing the manifold down and then applying new paint? I really don't want to tear it all down if I don't have to.

Any input would be greatly appreciated

It's really up to you, depending on what level of restoration perfection that you want. You can mask a lot of areas off, but there will be places that you cannot reach with a paint brush or spray can; of course, the missed areas will be fairly hard to see, unless you are looking for them.

Are you just doing the intake, or the exhaust too?

I would brush on the paint for the intake, but I would still use a primer after you wire brush it. As for the exhaust manifold, I'm not sure what, if anything, out of a paint can will stand up to the heat.

For what it's worth, I used POR-15 manifold paint on my 53 several years ago & it seems to be holding up well. Laid it down with a foam brush....

I have a ceramic coated set but too lazy to pull the others off & install 'em:D

I'm sure there are other companies out there that sell similar products.

This I can actually help a lot with! Here's what you want:

I cleaned off my entire engine block, and the manifold with engine degreaser and an old cloth. Worked great.

Here's the final product: and yes its brushed and I was able to get every little inch. You just have to cut your brush handle almost off, that will let you get in all the small cracks.

Take a look:
