Guest SalG (Sal Grenci)
I decided not to register my trailer in New York this year, the fee went up $30+ to bail out the MTA, and I don't use it much. (The Metropolitan Transportaion Authority, in down state NY got this $30+ on all car reg, including antique, along with a new payroll tax on top of the mortage tax and phone tax, etc. it already had.) A friend said he has his registered in Maine. Is anyone familiar with this and how it is done?

We are broke and they need to fill the gap!:mad:
Paul Dobbin
Don't forget to ask your insurance agent if your insurance state and you registration state have to match. The $30.00 savings could cost you a lot more when a loss occurs.

ex98thdrill
Is anyone familiar with this and how it is done?:mad:Sal,I know I"m on this late, but we've had our trailers registered in the state of Maine for 5 years now. It's all done online, we pay the money, we get it inspected in the state of New York every year and we've never had a problem. If you look at most of the big rigs on the road, you'll see Maine plates on the trailers. In the last 5 years we've paid a total of $200 to register both trailers in Maine. You see so many people running trailers with switched plates, no plates, expired plates, etc. Our registration is valid, the trailer is inspected, the registration comes back to our legal address, and we have our DOT numbers on the truck that's pulling it. $40 a year versus $150, we decided to do it. If someone decides to write us a ticket, we're still ahead of the game. Once we cross the state line, it's a dead issue. The only condition with the $20 registration fee is that we're not allowed to be in Maine more than 120 every year. We haven't been in the state of Maine since 1975, so I think we can manage that.:D
John_Maine
When I was at the Hemmings Concours a couple of years ago, some company was there with a tent offering to register collector cars in the state of Montana. Don't remember all the details but even paying their fee and setting up an LLC, it was a lot cheaper than regular registration in most states. I didn't go to the show this year and don't remember that they were there last year. Anyone else remember this?
Dan Marx
Many Class A motor homes are tagged in Montana. saves a lot of $$$$ in taxes.
John_Maine
So, you do form an LLC and register in that name?
