Guest 1Packard
Wanted one since I was a kid. Just aquired a 1930 model 726. Just schooled on the ole Detroit Lubricator. Wish I'd known! Dilemma now $1250 and wait for 3-4 months or off the shelf for $1,850. Any leads or suggestions would be most appreciated. Next, I'm now begging radiator advise. Am I to believe only the clasp over the cap is enough? Me thinks I have leaks. This is the car that was in the Nebraska museum for 38 years. Thanks!! If anyone is willing to let me email a picture of the inlet and cap, any sage advise by you fine folks would be greatly appreciated.

Ozstatman
Wanted one since I was a kid........You beat me, only took 42 years and I was 60 when I got mine in 2007!Regarding the leaks, seeing the car has been sitting for that long, probably with very little running, things like seals and rubber items deteriorate and when regular use is resumed this deterioration becomes evident. Best thing to do is go through any affected systems by disassembly, cleaning, renewal or replacement of deteriorated or defective parts to return everything to good workable and operating status. The cooling system is not pressurised so the radiator cap should not be, in itself, a cause for concern. Guest mitch lojek
sure would be great if you can give us a side view picture. congratulations!!!
mrpushbutton
If the car sat in a museum you will want to replace all of the hoses in the cooling system, make sure the packing on the water pump is good, change out all of the fluids, then drive it. drive it a lot, you will feel the car loosening up as you do. TexRiv_63
Nice car! What is the issue with the Detroit Lubricator carb?
Steve_Mack_CT
Congratulations, 1Packard. There are quite a few of us born after Packard's demise that love these and other prewar cars!Another option on your carb. may be to go with a cheaper replacement for the time being. Not sure if it is your first collector car, but repair kind of goes with the territory - really like a boat or even a house, as even a real good purchase will need repairs or work from time to time. Hope it did not dampen your enthusiasm - looks like a great car!
Guest 1Packard
What a great bunch of folks you all are. I knew that though before I signed up. The car was represented as having a number of things done to it by a reputable (I thought) Packard fellow in WA that acquired her. Even advertised with 28k original miles. The odometer is broken, Nice! Claims that the carb was rebuilt. Makes me doubt much of anything was done. Especially when I drained the oil. I got a pit in my stomach as the molasses ran out. A master Packard mechanic supposedly serviced her from stem to stern. As I cranked her after the oil change and fearing a rod knock, I was relieved that there was not. So you suck it up and move on I suppose. The bowl on the 51 is cracked in a couple and pookied up with JB. So, if you know this carb, you know what I'm facing for replacement. A new Yeska bowl and a rebuild with lots of warnings and a 3-5 month wait. If there are any leads out there, please let me know. Sure would love to drive this baby and get on with the next problem. Thanks for the heads up on the radiator not being pressurized. And thanks again for taking the time to address my issues. I hope to be a good steward of this 726 and this site as I share your admiration and knowledge of these old jewels.
TexRiv_63
Sorry to hear about the misrepresentation but unfortunately pretty common. The bowl problem on the detroit is also common. Unless you are showing the car for top points you might want to get a replacement carb, I think Zenith will work but I am no expert. If you have not already done so, call Jon at the Carburetor Shop - www.thecarburetorshop.com That way you could drive the car now and restore the Detroit at your leisure. Good luck.
