peecher
Came across a lubricant that might be an answer for use in the u-joints and "leaky" steering gears. It's a Dow Corning product called "MolyKote Longterm 00". It looks like it has similar properties as the infamous cylinder oil soda soap grease but may be probably better? http://www3.dowcorning.com/DataFiles/090007c880002bf6.pdf
ralphnof49
Looks like a good find that would stay liquid for the U joint space and if any leaked back into the ovedrdrive it shouldn't matter.
gdcont
Hi I found a local source that could order the MolyKoke Longterm 00 grease. Unfortunately the smallest size is a 12lbs tub @ $64. plus shipping. Is there another alternative to this grease? Is there a source in the club that supplies this or something close at a better price? Thanks George.
abelincoln
Several years ago I got a tube of "steering gear grease" from the Ford dealer, used in late 60's manual boxes. Seemed to work fine in my old 65 Mustang with a leaky box. (long gone.)Abe
peecher
I read in the Fordbarn that guys use straight STP in their leaky steering gear boxes...no leaky and it seems to work well.
barry22
The issue of using STP in a steering box came up in the 1955-57 Chevy Forum. The site moderator made the following comment:"STP is not a lubricant. It is a viscosity index modifier. Sooooo - the STP is not going to be beneficial and will most likely cause a lubrication related failure."Steering box oil recommendations - The Forums at Chevy Talk
