Roger Frazee
Are the steering wheels for the '47 and '48 Pontiacs interchangable? They look the same on the outside, but the inside of the hubs are different.
straight8pontiac
According to the 1953 Pontiac Master Parts Catalog, 1939-1947 are the same with part #507490. The 1948 steering wheel is different. Model "D" with part name saftiflex is part #511198. The 1948 wheel and trim ring listed as standard is part #510641. I hope this helps- Dave. Roger Frazee
That does help. Thanks. I recently aquired a '48 steering wheel and was hoping to put it on my '47. I guess I'll just have to pop '47 wheel off and see if the '48 wheel fits.
Guest rshoestock
The grip is the same but there is a difference in the accessory horn ring parts which make the 46 and 47 horn button different from the 48. There are three metal tabs which hold the horn button onto the ring and the placement of them changed for 48. If you want your old grip re-molded, join the 42-48 message board on yahoo at pontiac42to48messageboard : Dedicated to keeping these cars ORIGINAL and talk to Kevin in Cincinnati. He molds all the plastic for 42-48 Pontiacs and is currently working on correct rubber sills which Steele refused to make. Thanks. -Rick
