Hackneys were built in about 1957 by the Gordon W. Morton Co. on High Point Road in Greensboro NC. There were two models, Standard and Deluxe, the latter including a windshield, head/tail lamps, lightning-bolt trim on the sides and a battery-operated horn. Standard colors were two-tone red/white only. Trailer hitch was standard. Engines varied but were usually 2hp. A manual lever clutch allowed forward and reverse.

I have a 1958 Hackney that was bought for me new.

I have restored it painting it back to the original Carolina Blue and White. Still have the windshield and engine. Engine runs but is not in car right now because I use as focal point in our recroom.

My father sold several of them in his hardware store.

Glad you still have yours. It was great of your parents to buy one for you. Interesting that yours is in blue because the company advertised them in only red with white trim. I have a copy of some Hackney literature and Autolit www.autolit.com was selling original Hackney literature as well; they may still have some. A Hackney also showed up on eBay about five years ago. An east-coast amusement park which name escapes me ordered a fleet of Hackneys in 1956. There are some Hackney photos in Microcars www.onelist.com/group/Microcars .

I have a Hackney that was given to me by my grandfather. We believe that it was bought at a ford tractor companyin NC that also sold crosley products. I'm not sure of the year but its in really good shape with almost no rust. I am restoring it to its original condition. Any further detailed information about Hackneys or where others or parts can be found would be greatly appreciated. I have search google high and low and can't find much info. I'll post pictures very soon. Thanks!

Hi just joined this site. I also have a Hackney that I'm trying to restore this winter. it is rough, no trunk or engine. it is the deluxe model. I sure could use some closeups of the trunk lid and the latch, I made the trunk lid but do not know what the latch looks like or how it latches. also, what model engine is in your car? Jim

Mine has a Clinton 2hp.. not sure what model number but I'm restoring it so I'll look.

I bought this Hackney from an antiques dealer in Wilson NC. It was cool to see it and after looking at it for a while, struck a deal and put it on layaway payments. It has a 1hp engine installed, so I would assume that it was strictly a kids car and not able to pull an adult around fast enough. I have no idea how long it has been this way but it's probably been customized more than 10 yrs ago as that's how long i believe I have had it. Sorry for the sideways pics, I think I can adjust them to be horizontal.

Hi. I'm the daughter of Hubert Hackney and I thought I would share a unknown fact about the very first midget auto my daddy made. The first car was electric. It wasn't for sale but the prototype for the gas engine. It had a very long extinction cord (s) that provided the power. We had hours and hours of fun driving it as far as the cord would allow.
