Is it possible to make or use something other than actual valve lapping compound? For example, tooth paste, sand and grease, exct. I don't have lapping compound and am trying to repair a Briggs & Stratton engine I found on the curb.

Yup. Ordinary sand crushed on an iron plate with a hammer, stone, or piece of iron. Use a well worn rag as a sieve to get the grit you desire. Mix with grease that can be found around grease fittings on cars in parking lots and you are good to go...........Bob
