In an article from Antique Auto Magazine, March/April 1971, the Author, David Chambers cites a study by a major spark plug company where they found that a .040 gap gave the best performance though with a little rough ilde.

I have gaped my plugs on my 27 standard and 28 master at .040 and am happy with the results. The 28 has over 47,000 miles on it since I got it. The plugs are a nice toasty brown.
