Guest jumpinjivinjoe
I have a 1957 Mercury Monterey. What is a good modern grease for the steering pivot points? I recently put in the red grease which displaced a black/grey grease. Also do you suggest non detergent 40w oil for the crankcase?
Ron of Chicago
I would say that the grease that you are useing is just fine for the joints. The grease today is made with many more additives to help lubricate then what was in joints. As to the oil, I would use a good 20W50 Detergent oil. You have a filter to help trap any particles that may come loose. I would use Shell Rotella.Ron
Guest jumpinjivinjoe
thanks.for old cars shouldn't we use non-detergent motor oil because it will clean off the solidified grease that often seals up everything. Seems like last time I used non-detergent 40w. Of course if all seals hold 20w50 would be ideal.Joe
Ron of Chicago
That's very possible if the engine is that bad.
John348
From what I was to understand the non detergent should be used in engines with out an oil filter
