DarkCherryS10 10
I am probably going to purchase what appears to be a 1935 4 door Dodge hump back. I say appears because there are some questions. My first question is where is the VIN number on 35 Dodges? Is it a tag, or is it a stamp? How many digits is it?Here's what I know. The car LOOKs like a 35. It has the gas tank filler on the trunk like the 35's have. It also has the large hole in the roof and channel where the other piece would be placed over it and sealed. Of all the pictures I've seen of the 36 dodge 4 door the gas tank filler has been on the fender. So 35/36's were different correct? Now the sticky part. The title for the car say it's a 1937. I talked to someone that owned the car previous to the seller I'm buying it from. He said that he spoke to the Chrysler Dodge Museum. The guy there said it could be a real early model 37, that still has many of the 36 features. But then why the gas filler on the trunk as the 35 models had? He also stated that cars then didn't all have a firewall tag with a number on it.My concern is registering the Dodge. I have a title, but it's for a 37 and the car does not look like what most 37's look like. For instance, no split window in the rear.He stated that there was a stamped number on the door pillar. Now I'm trying to verify if that is the SAME number that is printed on the title. Edited June 24, 2010 by DarkCherryS10 (see edit history)
keiser31 5,698
The number should be on the passenger side front door pillar. Do you have a photo of the car? It will probably be a 1935 or 1936 since 1937 had the full steel top.
DodgeKCL 17
For what it's worth, the Standard Catalog of American Cars says that 1935 DUs had serial numbers in the 3 millions ,1936 D2s in the 4 millions and 1937 D5s in the 9 million area,9118501 to 9149361. If it has the original engine in it the correct model ,DU,D2 or D5, will be the 1st digits in the engine number on the front left corner of the block. Were you given too many numbers for the serial number? It could also be a Canadian car as their serial numbers were in the 9 millions during the 30s. As keiser31 says ALL Chrysler,Plymouth,Dodge and DeSoto serial number plates in those years were on the right hand door post mounted on their side vertically.
DarkCherryS10 10
The number I listed above was taken directly off of the title itself that says 1937, though it definitely looks like a 1935. I doubled checked and there are 8 numbers, not 7. I'm in the process with the seller to see about the numbers on the side of the door pillar.Should the numbers be stamped into the metal? Or is it a plate that's been screwed/riveted/attached into the metal?

Serial numbers for 1935 Dodge DU models -Hamtramck - 3756501 to 3913106Windsor - 9403286 to 9405679For the export/Canadian DV models -Lynch Road - 4991001 to 4992170Windsor - 9460021 to 9464305Windsor - Six series - 9316226 to 9316985Serial numbers for the 1936 Dodge D2 models -Hamtramck - 4015051 to 4276687Windsor - 9405681 to 9409048Export / Canadian (Six) D3 models -Lynch Road - 4992201 to 4995273Windsor - 9316901 to 9318219Canadian (DeLuxe Six) D4 models -Windsor - 9464311 to 9469955Serial numbers for the 1937 Dodge D5 models -Hamtramck - 4530451 to 4789907Evansville - 9118501 to 9149360Windsor - 9409056 to 9414740Export / Canadian (Six) D6 models -Lynch Road - 3913151 to 3920175Windsor - 9318226 to 9320000 & 9387361 to 9388420Canadian (DeLuxe Six) D7 models -Windsor - 9469961 to 9478110The VIN / serial number was also stamped on the chassis frame. The 1930's models had it on the side of the frame by the rear hangar for the front leaf spring, I believe. Later models had it up by the axle. Hope this helps.BillVancouver, BC
lowkey 0
If the windshield has four round corners it is probably a 35, two round, 36. there are exceptions like the convertible coupe, station wagon? and humpback panel. I believe the fenders on the 35 are also plain, no reinforcing bead on the edge. dave ma.

1936 D2 16
So. DarkCherryS10 - Don't keep us in suspense. What did you find out?Is it a '35 titled as a '37? There are many States that title cars as the year they were first sold from a dealer. So if this car sat from say late '35 and was sold Jan 2nd, 1937, it could be titled as a 1937.What ultimately happened? Did you buy it? How about some photos?
