Charles D. Barnette
Colorado Springs 2009 was my first BCA National to attend, and it was fantastic! I was particularly interested in the 50th anniversary celebration of the 59 Buick. The Buick 59 Division of the BCA was so "hot" that they blew out the boiler that heated water for the Crowne Plaza thus providing only cold water to cool us B59 lovers down. My legal assistant Carla will post shortly 16 of my pictures taken at this meet. I will provide the captions. Enjoy! Charles D. Included in order are the 3 young ladies in 2009 representing the LeSabre, the Invicta, and the Electra division of the 59 Buick; the beautiful 1959 Buick LeSabre Wagon; the optional removable radio of the 59 Buick housed in the glove compartment; the rare 1959 Electra Riviera; and the spirited 1959 Buick 4-door flat top like the one my dad owned. Guest Ctynes57
Here is the 3rd and final set. Included in order are the following: a flat top 59 Buick on tour during the meet; all of the 29 1959 Buicks parked at the Abbey for the Thursday night banquet in Canyon City; 59 Buicks on tour with a rainbow in the sky; an artist at work sketching the 59 Buicks on display at the Crowne Plaza; Mr. Brian Laurance - the guru of the 59 Buick; and we end with a beautiful 1955 Buick. Guest Ctynes57
Here is the beautiful 1933 Buick at the BCA National Meet believed to have been once owned by Queen Wilhelmina who was Queen of The Netherlands from 1890 to 1948 (gave up her throne to her daughter). In the great state of Arkansas we have a mountain-top State Park near Mena named after her as "Queen Wilhelmina". Notice the "Royal Crest" on the vehicle. Charles D. Barnette - it's a small world! Guest Ctynes57
Here is the "Deane Buick Co. " badge emblem with a 1959 flat top Buick depicted obtained by Charles D. Barnette at the Forum Breakfast thanks to Roy. The Deane Buick Company was a Denver, Colorado, dealership. Guest Ctynes57
Here are the autographed picture of Mr. Earl in a 1954 Buick, Mr. Earl's 1959 Buick scale model, and a 59 Buick scale model obtained from the Swap Meet all by Charles D. Barnette.
Charles D. Barnette
Dear Mr. Earl, I won at the AACA Forum Breakfast on Friday your autographed picture of you in a 54 Buick along with your 1959 AMT 1/25th scale Buick model (your gift exchanged hands three times during the "gift excahange", but I was determined to get what Mr. Earl had sent). Carla has already posted these items on this site along with the badge emblem of "Deane Buick Co." This famous Buick dealer operated for many years in Denver, Colorado (notice the depiction of the 59 flat-top Buick in the emblem). This item was won by Roy Faries, and he gave it to me knowing my passion for the 59 Buick. Speaking of Roy, you will be happy to know that he won a major literary award from the BCA Saturday night for his wonderful article in the March 2009 issue of the Bugle entitled "The 1954 Buick Landau Reunion" which is the event that happened in Texarkana with the reuniting of the original cups and thermos of the Landau with the Landau! Congratulations Roy! Charles D. Barnette
TxBuicks
Charles, Now that you mention it....I was so shocked and surprised to win the Literary award. Once I sat down, I realized I should have taken the microphone for a second to recognize you, the man who put the entire event together. I merely wrote about it, but it would have never happened without your efforts. I apologize for not announcing you involvement and giving you the credit you deserve. Charles D. Barnette
Roy, no apology needed. Just hearing the name Landau and the name Texarkana was enough for me as it made me feel right at home. You earned that award being the sole representative in Texarkana from the BCA, and you extended the life of the great Landau and our Museum by your excellent coverage. I am very proud to know both you and your wife (got to meet her in Colorado Springs) and count you both as personal friends-this is what the club is all about! Charles D. Guest Ctynes57
Yes we had Buick Wagons there including the 1959 Buick LeSabre Wagon and the scale model 1959 Buick Texan. Now I must apologize to Roy for not getting a good picture of his Buick Wagon. We will post these pictures in two sets. Enjoy and drool! Charles D. Guest Ctynes57
When I arrived at the Colorado Springs Airport on Thursday, July 2, 2009, I found on display this Pike's Peak racer. It goes along with the unusual Buick racer I would find at the meet. Here are also some random pictures for your enjoyment of some more Buicks at the meet. Charles D. Centurion
Charles, thank you for sharing your wonderful photos with us. Guest Ctynes57
As 29 precious B59s watched approvingly through the large plate glass windows of the Abbey in Canyon City, Colorado, the gala B59 evening banquet held on July 2, 2009, was going on in full force inside with at least 100 people present. Posted below are pictures of the B59 memorabilia on display there as well as pictures of people tables surrounded by highly, excited B59 lovers! What a night! Charles D. Centurion
Charles and Carla, thank you for sharing all the excellent photos. Is there any chance that you can e-mail the '59 banquet photos to me for posting on the '59 forums? No one else seems to have a comprehensive set of photos like you have! Guest Ctynes57
Here is a picture of the firetruck that arrived at the Colorado Springs Airport immediately after I landed. Also here are two pictures of Mr. Don DeMarco of Canada showing me the original wheel covers of his award winning 1959 LeSabre Wagon. Here are also two pictures of a yellow "something" (is it a Buick?) in traffic between the Crowne Plaza and the Doubletree Hotels. Finally here is an unfinished 1958 Buick Limited Convertible. Guest Ctynes57
Here are two pictures of work being done on a 1959 Buick carburetor during the show. Here are two pictures of either a 1957 or 1958 Eldorado Brougham Cadillac advertising a new website for automobile lovers - this car has the unique distinction of having been in Vegas this summer for the 1959 Cadillac 50th Anniversary celebration and then at Colorado Springs for the 59 Buick 50th Anniversary celebration. The final two pictures are of a B59 rest stop on tour and another scenic view of Colorado from inside a B59 on tour. Charles D. Barnette
Guest Ctynes57
The following pictures highlight the winner of the coveted first annual Hans C. Guest Ctynes57
Here are some of the "Older Buicks" that appeared at the show (40s and older). Guest Ctynes57
Here is the 1959 Buick Electra 2-door hardtop that carried me on tour at the meet owned by Dean and Vickie Stoltenberg (she is sitting in the back seat and he is pumping gas). Here are 4 pictures of me getting to sit in 2 1959 Buick Invicta 4-door flattops like my dad owned (also see the only remaining picture of dad's car complete with my brother and family cat on the hood taken circa 1965). The final picture shows the two very active Brians of the Buick 59 Division of BCA (Brian Laurance on the left and Brian Clark on the right). Charles D. Guest Ctynes57
First here is an example of the deluxe wheel cover of the 59 Buick; then here is an example of the super-deluxe wheel cover. Next is a custom 1957 Buick; then the two-tone 59 Buick 2-door; then the Florence Federal Prison seen on tour through the windshield of a 59 Buick where prisoner Timothy McVeigh was held before his death and where the Una-bomber faces or has faced incarceration (notice the red line of the speedometer at approx. 55 miles per hour and the panoramic windshield which comes in handy for a picture like this); then B59s lined up at the train museum located in Westcliffe, Co.; then a classic 59 Buick convertible at the meet; then a trio of 1958 Buick rear ends representing the Super, the Roadmaster, and the Limited; and finally Brian (with a huge smile) Laurance and his lovely wife with a table centerpiece (given away) in hand photographed at the conclusion of the Saturday night Awards Banquet of the BCA. Charles D. Barnette
In reflection, I truly must say The Buick National Meet at Colorado Springs exceeded all expectations! The first people I met and shook hands with on my arrival at the Colorado Springs airport were Tom Darrow (son of the outgoing BCA President Bill Darrow) and his beautiful wife. We all three shared a Doubletree Hotel van. One of the last persons I shook hands with after the Saturday night BCA Awards Banquet was again Tom Darrow who is really a nice young man reflective of fine future leadership for the BCA in my opinion. In between the handsakes lay a road of sheer enjoyment with the B59 tour riding in the Stoltenbergs' 59 Buick allowing me to sing B59 by the Medallions to my heart's content, the B59 Banquet served up by Sue Luck, The AACA Forum Breakfast where I got to meet Roberta, the attendance at the Flying W Ranch with the Chuck Wagon Dinner and the Western Show (they even mentioned Texarkana -my hometown-in one of their songs), the 249 Buicks on display of which at least 32 were B59s, the drive on the Interstate where I got to drive Brian Laurance's wonderful 1959 Buick Electra 4 door hardtop, and finally the 1959 Buick LeSabre wagon winning the Kaser award on Saturday night. We all share the common thread of love for the vintage automobile and the people who own them! Charles D. Barnette
Centurion
Charles, your enthusiastic attitude and gracious words throughout the Meet are among my best memories of our Colorado Springs event. I've got to say that it would not have been nearly as much fun for me if you had not been there.I appreciate that you spent the time and money to join us. Your Texan model was a great hit, and you might very well have inspired some future full-size re-creations of this one-off Buick show car.I'll continue to watch for a fine, original Arctic White '59 Invicta flattop with Copper Glow interior -- with you in mind.
