I was looking through Cars of the Fabulous '50s. Some fairly ironic quotes here 60 years later.

“We are exploring a new field.” Chevrolet general manager, T.H.Keating, on the fiberglass-bodied Corvette; March 1953.

“The Thunderbird will begin a new era in the automotive field.” Ford Div. G.M. L. D. Crusoe, during unveiling of Ford’s Thunderbird; Feb. 1954.

“We’re very enthusiastic about it. But it’s new. Some people think it’s just a gadget. The ones who have bought it are really enthusiastic about it.” Unidentified Chrysler dealership sales manager on the optional Highway Hi-Fi record player; Feb. 1956.

“There’s a certain romance for people in buying a car imported from Europe.” AMC distribution vice-president Roy Abenethy, on the success of AMCs Metropolitan.

“Ford surveys find only a limited place for the little car and no evidence that the American public is interested in lowering its standard of living by buying an economy car on a large scale.”

Mercury-Edsel-Lincoln general manager James J. Nance justifying Detroit’s reluctance to aggressively enter the small-car market. April 1958.

“We don’t like it but we have to write it when the buyer asks for it. Otherwise, he’ll go down the street.” Unidentified new car dealer on the increasing popularity of 36 month new-car loans; March 1958.

“Domestic cars are awful, particularly the styling.” Unidentified Los Angeles import-car dealer, on why he chose to sell imports instead of a domestic make; Sept. 1958.

“DeSoto is looking forward to a rising long0range demand for its cars.” DeSoto general manager J. B. Wagstaff; March 1959.

Enjoy - Steve
