JoelsBuicks
After cleaning up the inside and replacing a bearing cup in my 36 Roadmaster steering box, the shop manual calls for it to be filled with "... a very light non-flowing lubricant..." Is this just regular gun grease? Thanks,
jbbuick22
Joel, Do not use grease, use gear oil or STP. JB
Mark Shaw
Joel, Use the heaviest gear lube you can find... I use SAE 250, and I know others who mix STP with heavy lube oil.Grease will separate from the gears and not provide enough lubrication.
The Old Guy
I use 140 gear oil, and if it leaks past the seals, I use moly chassis lube to fill it up. They mix well, and when you hit the right consistency, the leak stops and the reservoir stays full. My 40 has been running since 1972 and over 100,000 miles on this concoction. Guest Grant Magrath
Hi.I don't know whether you can get it in the U.S. but we use BP Semi-fluid grease. Seems to do the trick!CheersGrant
JoelsBuicks
Ok, I will look for the heavy lube oil or mix up my own with STP. My seal looks good and fits tight so I don't predict a leak problem. Thank you very much for the input.Joel
