Those tops are nice AND my personal favorite. Gravity doesn't mess them up as they age.

In my view it was to attract the female buyer.

I believe the tops were aftermarket. I'm not sure by whom. Having grown up in the 60's this was typical modern. Fad or mod if you wish.

Too bad it didn't make it. I think there rather cool.

Here's another opinion from a web site that had the same photos.

"Whether this was a serious proposal for production or for a series of show cars is not known. In the '60s, Bill Mitchell was the head of GM Design, so this was done under his watch. Other than the obvious, the author has no other information on the convertible top fabric ideas; these were not real convertible tops, but rather cloth stretched over what was likely a fiberglass form."

In my simple mind/opinion, they looked much better in a picture, but the ones I saw in real life, NOT SO COOL.

I can only imagine how much they reflected resale of those cars. They surely had an affect on limiting some buyers. You either LOVED them or HATED.

The 1961 Buick Flamingo show car may have been in part the inspiration.

It was actually a trimmed Electra 225 convertible painted a shocking flamingo pink.

It had a front passenger seat that was reversible, which allowed the front seat passenger the opportunity to face the rear seat passengers and converse.

Man, I'm loving this thread and I'm only a few pages in! Anyways, I was reminded of this old pic of my mom and dad, no idea what the car is but I recall them talking about having a Buick when they were young.
