Spark plugs

To the best of my knowledge all U.S. cars have used either 14mm or 18mm sparkplugs since at least the 1920's, as do European makes. How did the various countries agree on metric sparkplugs when they did not agree on anything else? Does anyone know the background/history of this decision?

They never did agree if you ask me. That's because there were more threads styles than you mentioned since 1920. Like pipe threaded ones in various reach lengths, as well as those very tiny threads on minature plugs that I "think" were on some sort of Ford engine in the 30's. I believe I have some NOS ones here someplace.
