Reg Evans
Yeah.....1st gear suddenly started doing a lot of clunking as I pulled away from a stop sign. 2nd and 3rd are fine. So...I'm looking for a good used 3 speed floor shifter trans for my 38 Dodge. Thanks, Reg
hwellens
You probably need a cluster gear. If it makes noise in reverse also you may only need a first/reverse slider gear. The gears will be easier to find then a good complete trans.
Reg Evans
Yeah. only 1st gear makes the banging/clunking noise. I wonder if a 3 speed 1/2 ton truck trans of similar vintage would be compatable ?
hwellens
The cluster (countershaft) gear (part 661302) is the same in all mopar cars from 1935 - 1939. The low and reverse sliding gear (part 661299) is the same in all mopar cars from 1935 - 1938. I have had the same problem and it was the cluster gear that was chipped. You may be able to find a good used one.
Reg Evans
Thanks hwellens,So if I wanted to just install another used transmission would all the 35-39 car transmissions drop right in? How about a 3 speed truck trans of similar vintage? I don't really want to spend a bunch of $'s rebuilding mine.
keiser31
The truck may have a larger input shaft.
Thom
The 1st/reverse gear (Mopar #661299) is listed on eBay and is a NOS for a buy now price of $45 + 10.45 shipping. Not a bad price. I bought one several years ago from a supplier for twice the price. Bowler Transmission put it in my 38 Dodge Standard Trans and it works like new.If your intersted and can't find it, let me know and I will send you a link.
