On a staight 8 (248) is there a gasket between the intake and exhaust manifold? I took mine apart and there was red silicone but not real gaseket. On reinstalling, it is better to bolt the intake to the exhaust and then to the head or install the exhaust to the head then the intake an at last bolt the two together?

There should be a gasket there...And you should bolt the intake and exhaust together before bolting it to the head...25-30 ft. lbs with a cold engine...retorque after a week or so...Before bolting everything up, make sure the manifolds are true and in line with each other (or close)....

Would it make sense to bolt the two manifolds together finger tight and then to the engine and once the assembly is tight to the head, then tighten the connecting bolts? This way a less chance of a leak at the head?

Dear Rusty:

You've got it right. Finger tighten the 2 pieces, put it on the head, tighten in steps along the manifolds and the joint between manifolds last.
