Guest jumpinjivinjoe
How do you check the transmission fluid level in a '36 dodge and what type of lubrication do you use?
Thom
Check and fill the fluid level from a filler plug/hole on the side of the transmission. Fill until it runs out of that hole. A drain plug is on the bottom of the transmission case. The service manual says to use SAE 160w or 140w gear oil for operating temps above 32 degrees. I could only find SAE 85w-140 transmission gear oil, so that's what I use on my 38. Thom
Thom
Just read a post in the technical section of the AACA General Discussion under "20's Transmission Lubricant Suggestions?". They suggested 600W or the SAE 250W which is the equivalent to 600W. They stated that the 85W-140 was just too thin for the old gears, and they will sound loud. Come to think of it, my transmission is a bit loud with the thin lube. You might read that post.

Guest jumpinjivinjoe
On the Penrite website they have a search for trannsmission, differential, and motor oil lubrication. For Dodge the years go back to 1923. It says I should use "TRANSOIL 90" for the transmission in my '36 Dodge. http://www.penritedata.com/au/db/vehiclewizard2_s.php?cid=16 and http://www.penrite.com.au/html/s02_artic...p;nav_top_id=61Thanks for the suggestion
