I need to do something about the wear or galling of the axle hubs on my Lincoln. I purchased sleeves to do the repair, but it appears that nearly half of the axle hub will need to be ground away to install the 1/8" thick sleeves. Has any one done this on their Lincoln and have you had any negative results?

I have done this on English Fords, but it usualy requires splitting the axle into its 2 halves, and taking these to an engineering company with a large lathe,(a lathe with a large centre hight is needed to clear the spring mounts as they are swung around in the chuck) where the axle ends can be turned down to the correct diameter for the new bearing sleeves.

I don't know of any quickie way to do this with the axle in the car, has anyone else solved this problem in an easier way???

PS, this is a new restore nearing completion and I have 0 miles on them, but from all of the things I have read about the repairs, the only problems I hear are improper sizing of the axles and not being turned true. This is avoided by having them ground to size by someone that can read a mic, then heating the new sleeve and pressing it on. Notice on the photo with the galling and wear the bottom side of the orginal surface. It is undercut somewhat anyway, so it doesnt appear you take any real strength away from the axle.

I had a pair of axle housings "Turned " down in a large lathe at an engineering"machine' shop about 14 years ago and the new sleeves pressed on.They run well, done about 14 thousand miles on them now. Keep them greased, grease nipple under housing, back of backing plate. The sleeves usually only mostly wear on the under side, "the bottom" thats where the load runs on the needle roller bearing in the brake drum.
