1989 Buick Lesabre

Ok, I posted this up a few months ago, but, cant find anyone's responses now! So, I am repoasting to get your opinions:

Up for sale is my Uncle's 1989 Buick Lesabre 2 dr. with:

Leather Interior

Power Wind., Locks, tilt, cruise, etc.

Newer tires

105,000 miles

runs great (no kidding)

The Interior looks immaculate

Exterior looks immaculate (a few small things here and there)

Everything works and works great!

Not a problem with anything! I have driven it about 30miles and it runs fantastic and is comfortable as well as fast, it is almost as comfortable as my Mark V. And apparently does not guzzle gas

Now, he wants $2000 for it, is this a good deal? Because I went to Kelly Blue Book and they said that it was only worth $1300 in immaculate condition. But, is KBB correct? Also, what is the reliability on one that has been taken care of? and what is the mpg on hwy? How much do parts run? My Uncle is the second owner and bought it from a little old lady, who came into the dealership, buying a new car (NO KIDDING! LOL!)

A 2-door LeSabre from the late 1980s-early 1990s is a fairly rare car; most were 4-doors. If everything is in proper tune, it should get between 25 and 30 mpg on the highway. The 231 V-6 is good for 200,000 miles without major repairs, if it is taken care of, not abused, oil changed regularly, etc. $2000 is a bit on the high side for a 19-year-old car with 100,000 miles, but if it has been garaged and looks nearly as good as new, and everything works, then it is probably worth it. What else can you buy for $2000 in the used car market, which doesn't need any apparent repairs, and all of the accessories work? About the only negative I can think of is the electronics, which make the car just about impossible for the average backyard mechanic to work on it or even diagnose problems with it.

Agree with Pete; in a normal world, the right buyer could come along and pay the $2K or something close to it.

However, in a world of $4 (and possibly $5) gas, all bets are off. Yes, the car can get up to 30MPG on the road, but 99% of the buying public doesn't know a Buick can get that kind of mileage.

They associate good mileage with Toyota and Honda, even if the car is a 16MPG Toyota Land Cruiser.

Ain't perception great?

As I've posted previously, my '89 LeSabre Limited 2-door is my daily driver. With nearly 190,000 miles, the car is comfortable, quiet, ultra-reliable, and economical.

In my view, you could easily spend far more than $2,000 to buy a car that would not serve you nearly as well as this old Buick.

Wes, are you considering buying it? If not, can you post some pictures. I agree that 2K is a bit high however it's tough to say what is a good price without something to look at.

ps: take a good look inside the door jambs at the bottom of the A pillar and the area just below the windshield as well as at the post for the door catch. Yes, both sides.

I'll get some pics. if I can, It has been a CA car and garged all of it's life, my uncle is the second owner and he bought it from the older lady who is his customer at our local Chevy/Buick dealer. He has owned it for 2 yrs. and has just driven it to work and kept it up. You would think it is a new car, if the design wasnt 20 yrs old. The only wear is a little on the corner of the driver's seat. And the paint has some unnoticeable nicks here and there. It was repainted like 10 years ago, and it was a good repaint. I might try and get him to go into the middle with the price. KBB says 1300-1500 and I might offer 1600 or 1700 this thing is immaculate and runs excellent (I drove it for 45 min on crowded ca fwys and surface streets and it runs good) the leather interior with the exception of the little wear spot on a seam looks great, dash looks new, etc. He honestly didnt know how much kbb said the value was as he only deals with new cars. But, after I show him he might go down a little, he thought he might get 2500 for it, from someone else but, if I didnt buy it but, I will show him the kelly blue book.

Does the dash have the full compliment of analog guages? There were three dashs available I believe. An electronic digital may or may not have been available. Then the standard speedomenter and gas guage with idiot lights and the sport dash had speedometer, tach, oil temp volts and gas guage.

Well . . . Kelly Blue Book is not the only price guide out there. As I understand it, it was "invented" by the bankers to generate consistent loan value figures on vehicles rather than gauge real world value. I just looked in my 12-07 Old Cars Price Guide and it shows a #3 condition 2-dr LeSabre Limited at $3100.00, with a #1 pretty much doubling that (in reality, IF there was one that was a real #1 condition, it should be worth that but if it was put "into service", the depreciation would be monumental). My suspicion is that it would be an easy #3 vehicle (from the description).

Depending upon how you look at it, $2000.00 can be either "a deal" or "tooooo high". As stated, if you look at what the same money will buy at a used car dealer's lot (in that age of vehicle, you'd have to look at the tote-the-note lots to find one), you can understand how the $2000.00 can be "a deal", but for somebody who's more into rwd cars and "collectable" vehicles, then even $1000.00 might be too much. Finding something in the Buick's mpg AND comfort range at the same price and condition can be might near impossible, I suspect.

PLUS, you know the history of the car, which should count for something (but would just be "a story" on somebody's used car lot).

Just some thoughts,

  • 2 weeks later...

Ok, I took a look at the car today, and it has the full gauge pack, power locks, seats, windows, digital climate control, am/fm/cassette, leather like I said before is immaculate, cruise, and a whole bunch of other bells and whistles. I will probably pick it up next week (when my paycheck comes in!).
