Guest Drake
I'm in the process of flushing my brake system. I purchased two quarts of heavy duty DOT3 brake fluid, per the service manual. My question: Has anyone used DOT4 or silicone brake fluid with any success? Thanks in advance for your comments.
Ronnie
The following is from a previous discussion here about brake fluids.<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body"> A good brand of Dot 3 is all you need, but plan on changing it every two to three years...depending on the humidity in your area.Dot 4 is synthetic but not silicon and can be used.<span style="font-weight: bold">Dot 5 is silicon and cannot be used. The ABS valves/solenoids will airate silicon and the pump may not get proper lubrication with silicon based fluid. </span></div></div>

Barney Eaton
DOT-3 is good enough, plentyful and inexpensive.DOT-4 is better on paper but not worth the extra money if you flush your Reatta brakes every 2-4 years as you should.Dot-4 will also absorb moisture and will also need to be replaced, so for normal driving, DOT-3 will work fine.
