Bob Kinker
My 65 Valiant slant 6 got good gas mileage, as did my VW's. 6 cyl Novas & Falcons would be good also.

At the risk of being US-centric (and given that the original question was posted from a member in California), I assumed the question was about US cars. There are lots and lots of obscure little cars built in the 1960s that probably got phenomenal gas mileage. Many were even available in the US. Honda 600, Subaru, etc. There's even the Reliant that was discussed recently. Of course the VW was probably the most mainstream economy car available in the US.If the question was intended to cover US-built cars, then the field narrows considerably.
