JEWETT

I once dug up the remains of an old 1920s Jewett in a dryrun on my grandmother's farm about thirty years ago. Sadly it was too far rusted to be restored. Doing research I've noticed there are more restored antique Jewetts in Europe than here in the USA. Any reason for that? Thanks!

Maybe their grandmothers didn't bury them.

Joking aside, if I recall correctly the Jewett was a small car made by Paige. There were other cars made in the US about the same time that were smaller than usual and were popular in overseas markets. The Whippet was one. The first Chryslers in the mid 20s were on the small side and had quite a vogue in England and Europe.

American cars were largely kept out of the market by high tariff barriers starting in the late 20s.

So the 1920's probably represents the peak of US export sales at least in proportion to total production numbers. Although why Jewetts should survive overseas more than they did at home, I can't guess.
