ID of year of engine - 1955 OLDS 98 Holiday

I hope i posted this in the right place... I have a 1955 OLDS 98 Holiday.. i would like to know that the engine is also a 1955..the engine serial number which is supposed to be stamped on left hand cylinder bank block is not there. A 1955 4 barrel carb would not fit properly and had to be adapted.. I was told that late 1955's off production line were sometimes fitted with a 1956 v8 engine.. I would appreciate any information you can give me..thanks
