Wheel Speed Sensor Availability?

Does anybody else go through wheel speed sensors like I do? Starting a year and a half ago, I had my ABS light come one...scanned the code, looked it up in the service manual and checked AC voltage from the sensor and all...then I found the rubber insulation of the sensor wire was cracked and exposing the braided aluminum wire and eventually ate through it. To get just the sensor, I had to buy the entire steering knuckle and hub bearing from a junkyard. About six months later, the ABS light came back on, scanned it and found the other sensor on the other side to have done the same thing. Replaced it and have been good for a while. Now the ABS light is on and a rear speed sensor code is pending. Circuitry checks good with the J-tool pinout box so I'm sure it's a sensor again, the only problem is where to find one. I'm in the process of contacting Jim Finn and I see a few listed online (Parts America and Rock Auto) but one says it could take 111 days and when I called Parts America (and spoke to someone who spoke good English!!! yay) they said I'll have to check back some time in June to see if they get any in stock. Does anybody know where I can find some rear speed sensors or what other vehicles can I use beisdes the Riviera/Toranado/Eldorado? Thanks

D-a-n-i-e-l FWIW I'll see parts listed on Partsamerica website which are not listed on the local store's computers, perhaps that's coming into play here.

Been there, tried it. If you put the rear speed sensor into your shopping cart on Parts America.com, they will tell you that, " None of the items in your cart are currently available in our stores or warehouses. Please contact Customer Service at (877) 808-0698 - alternate items may be available that will meet your needs." That's what I was talking about in my original post when I said I called and was very surprised to talk to someone who speaks good english! They told me basically I would have to check back in June to even see if they have it in stock and they can't let me 'order' it because they would have to hold onto my money.

As far as the NAPA website, I'm trying to figure out why the part you sent me comes up as a 'Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) Sensor - Rear' for $97.49 and when I click on it, the description title says, 'ABS Sensor - Right Front' for $97.49? The picture looks right though.

I think I'll go to a NAPA and see for sure. Thanks though

On GMPartsDirect, when you continue your order with the sensor, this message appears: 'These part numbers were not found in our database: 16464. The part numbers you seek have either changed to a new part number or no longer available from GM. Please email customerservice@GmPartsDirect.com to verify the correct part numbers needed.

Your shopping cart is empty.' Guess I can shoot them an email. All this seems like something is telling me that these sensors are hard to come by...

Does anybody else have/has had issues with their wheel speed sensors? Thanks

Just got an email back from GMPartsDirect saying:

1646478, the part number you requested has been discontinued and is no longer available from GM. You will have to find an aftermarket source for this part. You may be able to locate one through VPI (Vintage Parts Inc.) at 1 (877)846-8243.

However, I successfully ordered one from NAPA online for just over $100, even though its description is mis-labeled as a RF sensor. The part number matches the correct rear part numbers found on RockAuto and PartsAmerica. I'll let you know if the order ever comes through!

Yeah I now see the problem, I think it's the correct part number and part but the "right front" description is wrong.

The 530079 part number at PartsAmerica matches Napa's part number

Sorry I did'nt catch the problem when I first checked it out.

Edit, looks like I was typing a bit slower than you.

hope it works.

We need to find out if the units are available from Ford, SAAB, or Teves in Germany. Certain parts of the country (Florida, California) seem to be particularly hard on rubber parts. Further, since the fronts flex more than the rears due to turning stresses, they are the most likely to have problems. This will accellerate as the lines age.

I wonder if there is a rubber dressing we could use that will help extend the life of the sensors.

I tightly wrapped my 'new' front ones I put in with electric tape to keep the elements directly off...hope that helps!

lol...just as I thought. I told you I ordered that Rear Wheel Speed sensor yesterday from NAPA online using the same link Mike_s posted and here is the email I recieved today:

"NAPAonline has cancelled order number 302249. The part number is currently out of stock and on a factory backorder. NAPAonline is not able to estimate a time frame as to when the part(s) will be in stock next. A local NAPA auto parts store may be able to special order just the specific part(s) you need directly from the supplier and usually will receive the item(s) within a few business days. We apologize for the inconvenience this may cause you and we thank you for choosing NAPAonline!

Have a nice day!"

Looks like I'm waiting for Jim Finn to reply or going junkyard hunting!!! smile.gif

Bummer, good try though.

Does any one know if the the only differences between the front and back sensors are cable lengh and cable support grommet locations.

The point being, could front ones, if available, be used in the back if the excess cable is secured out of the way, or the cable shortened?

I think he tried but had no luck

"If you put the rear speed sensor into your shopping cart on Parts America.com, they will tell you that, " None of the items in your cart are currently available in our stores or warehouses"

just a wierd question as I had a similar issue. A brake "expert", but otherwise a pretty good guy told me that my sensors were bad, and I believe he used a pin tester. My local Buick guy who has two Reattae said to just replace the Master Brake Relay, and see what happens. No problems since. If you haven't replaced it, considering the frequency of your problem, you might consider it

Daniel, if you look at my second post, I noted where I tried Parts America a try and they told me an 'estimated' time to try back would be June 4 so I can give them a try again, but looking at all these places being 'unavailible' I'm kind of under the assumption that every place is out of them since they are not produced anymore...but that's just the hint I'm getting...

TomT, something to try about the relay I guess, but I figured I could obviously see a cracked and frayed part of both front speed sensors when they went bad, hence setting ABS codes and turning on my ABS light. Now the codes are for one of the rear sensors and when I was under the car, I remember one of them the rubber jacketing was coming off allowing mositure and the elements to get in and deteriorate the metal braided jacketing around the outside of the cable, which is simulating a twisted pair to keep EMF away from other components.

Does anybody live in the eastern Mighigan area or Detroit area know of any salvage yards with E-bodys (Toronado, Rivera, Reatta, Eldorado)? Thanks
