1965 401 v8, rebuilt.Filled with 5wt. hd. and run about 1/2 hr. Drained and refilled with 10/30. Engine now has about 600. miles. I want to draun and refill w/new filter, would you use 5w20,--5w30,or 10w30.

On a fresh rebuild I'd run 10W 30, as I recall the 5w came into play with the tighter engine tolerances in the 80's. If ya run into extreme heat then 10W 40. I would not use the 5 weight oils at all. Just personal preferance.

I use Quaker state 10w30 in all of my cars for over 30 years with never a problem. Maybe it,s because the Buick lab used it then.

You can probably find a "virgin oil analysis" (VOA) at www.bogistheoilguy.com. There have been some favorable comments on the "goodness" of the Brad Penn oil and it does have a good bit of zddp in it (according to the VOAs). BUT no more than CI-4+ diesel oil (usually SL rated, as the Rotella T synthetic 5W-40 I can still find at WalMart. Mobil 1 also has a 5W-40 TurboDieselTruck oil, which has at least as much zddp as the RotellaT CI-4+ syn oil does.

There is also a "Gearhead" brand oil made in FL for older engines.

Viscosity-wise, 10W-30 or 10W-40 OR the similar 15W-40 CI-4+ diesel-rated "dino" oil would probably be fine. As would the 5W-40 CI-4+ syn oils. KEY thing is to NOT use the "CJ-rated" diesel oils which are designed for the current-production new diesels with particulate traps and have "SM" API ratings . . . with less zddp than the prior CI-4+ oils. For some reason, the RotellaT 5W-40 is priced about $1.00/qt less than the Mobil 1 products, which makes it just a little more than blended synthetic of any brand.

Many choices!
