48 Cutting out

Morning,I was out driving my 48 Deluxe last night and having a great time, OD was engaged and I was "styling".

All of a sudden it cut out and came right back, did it several times, it is not skipping but cutting out. I thought it might be the kick down switch on the OD so disengaged the OD but it still did it several times more. When I got home I jiggled the wires but couldn't make it happen again. I will pull the dist over the weekend and see if there is a bad wire in there, any other suggestions? Would a bad condensor cause this? Thanks, Dave

Could be the condenser. Normally, a condenser will not go dead short, but definitely possible. Could be the coil, but they rarely fail. Could be the ignition switch. I would check for power at the coil when it has cut out. Things like coils and condensers are normally sensitive to heat (i.e. work when cold, fail when hot)

With all that said, I am assuming you have already checked the basics like point condition and point gap. If you suspect the O.D. the kickdown cutout wire can be removed from the coil to completely eliminate the O.D. from the equation.

Man, I hate those Intermittent problems like that. smirk.gif

I would first suspect the Ignition-coil, I had one do the exact same thing.

Another strange and unusal intermittent problem I had, was the Amp-meter was loosing connection inside the gauge, when it got hot from the bad connection, then reconnected enough when it cooled down. Fixed it by soldering over a crimped connection.

Fuel pump/stuff in tank. I had similiar problem with my 49-it was trash in fuel pump. Only happened while driving-at idle no problem. On separate occasion I had the coil go bad as described above when it got hot.

Well I had a chance to look at things today. I checked battery connections etc and everything looked good. I looked at the distributor and everything looked good, I checked the points and they seemed about right-- When I put it back together it wouldn't fire, so off with the cap and re-adjust the points. Now it would fire but not not run, I checked the carb and it was getting gas, so I pulled the distributor and took a closer look. It turns out the terminal on the condenser was loose, the wire was not making a good connection, I put a new end on and put things back together and it started right up--No test run today since it was late when I was finished, I will take her for a drive tomorrow and see if I have solved it. I am pretty confident that was the problem, wire was not tight and when I put it back together with a good connection it started right up. I will update tomorrow- Thanks for all the good advice--

Dave
