R Walling
Could anyone tell me what exactly comprises an “Opera coupe” in a 38 Buick Special? Thanks in advance. Roger
eric_b_1937
Opera Coupes have two Opera seats behind the drivers seat. The seats fold up into metal storage boxes that are mounted to a wooden trunk divider. Seat backs are mounted to the side walls so passengers sit sideways. R Walling
Thank you Eric. Is that the same differance as between a sport coupe and a business coupe? Mine has the folding seats and two fender mounted spare tires.
Guest rlbleeker
A business coupe has no rear seat.
eric_b_1937
A sport Coupe is an Opera Coupe I believe this might be an advertising name confusion situation between the Fisher Body Company and Buick advertising. I will compare my books. A business Coupe has a flat wood board behind the driver’s seat across the cab between the two opera windows called a package shelf. There are a few shelves under the package shelf accessible by pulling the drivers seat back forward. This is where the spare tire can be stored on some makes of the body like Pontiac and Chevrolet. The dual side mounts are optional equipment. My 1937 Buick started life as a business coupe but at some time it lost its shelves. So I added the opera seat assembly. Now it is a sport coupe with a business coupe body tag. The seats and shelves are the only difference in Business and Opera. I like the Opera better, it’s nice to be able to haul 4 passengers.
R Walling
Thanks Eric. Now that I know what I have, I have to decide if I should rebuild the rear seats or ad a package shelf.Decisions, decisions...
Oxnard Montalvo
The 38 Buick Special Businessman's Coupe did not have a package shelf as other GM vehicles did, the area behind the seat was open to the floor.
Guest rlbleeker
What about '37?
Oxnard Montalvo
I think it's a safe assumption to say a '37 had no shelf either, but I don't know for sure. Where's a '37 owner?
Guest rlbleeker
I've got a '37 and it has a low carpeted shelf. I'm pretty sure it's not original; now wondering if it should be there at all.
