Well...lemeesee, being a farm kid from eastern Washington, the first off road machine I drove was an early '50's Farmall Super M wheel tractor, long before I could drive on the roads legally. Then to the rolling wheat fields and a Caterpillar D6C in the sixties. Also a John Deere 95 Hillside that would level to 47 percent on the hills...when I was 18. In the Army after Vietnam, they sent me to a place called Fort Hood TX. I drove a five ton Honest John missile launcher...a huge gas powered rig in '70. I drove a wheat bankout wagon powered by a 1673 Cat diesel and an eight speed clark automatic four wheel articulated drive in the sixties and early seventies.

I didn't drive it but rode in it.... a "trolley" made out of wood placed on top of a 1962 Plymouth body. It would be used for parades. My Dad would sit down in the car and peer out of the trolley's grille. You could fit 20-25 passengers on the trolley.

Of course, then he bought it. I guess the Kiwanis guys who sold it to him were relieved to be free of it. It languished in the rectory garage until he passed it off on another trolley lover.

it took me years of therapy to forget her name...but seriously, an industrial forklift on a construction site that was 4wd, 4 wheel steering, crab steer, had enough levers to scare anyone, and I was on a site with about 100 guys watching. But it was fun. The '29 Ford Tudor we had was pretty different to drive as well.

Yea I know what you mean about the 29 Tudor. My brother in law has had one for 38 years, stock as the day it rolled off the assembly line. He let me drive it about ten years ago.I drove it about 3 blocks and it was a lot of work. Adjusting fuel mixture , advancing and retarding spark , double clutching, mechanical brakes, manual steering. I never realized how advanced even the old clunkers I drove in high school were compared to that 29. But it was a memorable experience

A Model A Ford is a piece of cake. Try a Model T sometime. Practice the pedal positions in a big empty lot before entering the highway.

Gas is the right lever on the steering columm. Up is idle position. Down is full throttle.

Spark is the left lever. Full up is retarded, Down is advanced.

Brake peddle is on the right where the gas would be normally.

Middle peddle is for reverse. Brake position in a modern car. (Now I know why pointed toe shoes were invented.)

Left peddle is for low and high speed and neutral which is normally a clutch position.

The parking brake lever is all the way to the left and if pulled half way back it will put the car in neutral position. All the way back will put on the parking brakes. All the way forward will allow the multi disk clutch pack to lock up and run you over if you try to hand start it in that position. It needs to be all the way forward to get the car in high gear while driving.

Carb is adjusted similer to the model A with a rod that comes though the firewall on the right side.

I have taught some fellows how to drive a model T Ford. Some learn easily. grin.gif

And some are all thumbs and just never seem to get it. shocked.gif
