ExYankee
I have heard the question about street rods at local region meets was brought up at one of the Round Table Discussions at a recent meet. I was wondering which and/or how many regions let street rods perticapate (Where is spell check on here?)and what classes do you have for them? Guest snkchevcol
ExYankee,
I am a member of the Roanoke Valley Region and a few years ago we decided to start letting street rods and modifieds attend our shows. We have several members that have both anique and street rods/modifieds, that we thought we would try some different classes at a couple shows and see how it worked out. Now at our shows we have the regular aaca classes for the antiqes and seperate classes for the others. These classes are broken down into the following:
Stree Rods thru 1948
Modified- Class A 1949-1959
Modified- Class B 1960-1969
Modified- Class C 1970-1981
Special Interest 1977-1981 (Special Interest Class is vehicles in the last 5 years following the last AACA youngest car, which is 1976 for 2001)
Special Non-Judged All cars thru 1976 in need of restoration or unfinished and in the process of restoration.
The street rod and modified classes have a different judging form than what we use for the antiques.
If you have any other questions about this subject just e-mail me and I will try and help you.
Rock
D Binger
Rock,
Have you had any problems with this set up for shows. Have the die hard antique fans objected to this? Have your shows been sucessful?
Dan
Guest SalG (Sal Grenci)
ExYankee, The two do not mix on Long Island, so many shows to choose from, the rods do their own thing. SalG
Guest
In reference to Sal's other thread about car show revenues, it was decided to "embrace" hot rods, with the big local event I've been involved with over the years ("Time Machines," Durham, CT, http://members.nbci.com/TBIRDSOFCONN/timemach.htm), and in fact hot rods were the "feature" in last year's event (the "Time Machines" event has had a "featured marque" each year--this year it's Pontiac, in recognition of it's 75th anniversary). In practical terms, there are a lot of hot rods out there and if they're made to feel welcomed, via their own awards to compete for, etc., they can have a very positive effect on car show revenues.
[ 07-12-2001: Message edited by: Steve Mierz ]
[ 07-12-2001: Message edited by: Steve Mierz ]
Guest
This sort of joint effort is just what the hobby needs. Glad to see it happening in some areas.
Bry
Guest snkchevcol
Dan
So far everything is going great for this type of set up. We have actually had a major increase in our attendance due to working together. I'm sure there are a few that don't like it, but the ones in favor far out weigh the ones that don't. In fact the club in town that is street rod and custom only works with our region a lot and we work with them at their shows, so it works our for everyone involved. The main thing is people are working "together" and not against each other.
Rock
D Binger
Rock,
I was just wondering about the problems you might have had because I know that there
are some antiquers that throw 4th grade fit when hot rods are mentioned. I have always
found that they are great people. I have found that these roders can show us antiquers a thing or two about getting a vehicle ready for a show. I have attended many local shows in this area with the hot rods and I have enjoyed them very much. After all we have the same interest except there is a major difference in opinion about the drive train.
Dan
