exhaustive question

Jeffin, Engineering wise the problem has to consider Velocity and Volume of air; but the simplest method would be to take the bend you are considering and cut the bend at it's center and then measure the diameter if it is only shrunk down to 2.5" you would be OK. but remember using 3.0 tubing reduces the velocity of the exhaust which lessens the scavageing effect.. There is more to the problem than that which meets the eye. He, He, He, Lou

The 3" system is a VERY TOUGH fit by the fuel tank and over the axle. If you are running a rear swaybar, forget it. I've treid to make my 3" get along with the Polybushings rear bar and I haven't succeeded yet. Over harsh bumps, they make contact. The 2.5" system would make you life a bunch easier.

Haveing said that, you will LOVE cool.gif the way the car runs with an efficient exhaust system! You already upgraded the SMEC if I remember correctly right?

As a side note, I took my 90 TC to the drags last night for it's maiden voyage. I prefer 1/4 mile over 1/8th but gotta take whats avail... RPM's were too high on the launch and it spun (I do have a torque biasing LSD) first gear, so I short shifted into second and it spun thru that gear too. Third gear felt really good and I eneded up with a 9:40 @ 79.8 MPH not great, but I'll throw the drag radials on next time and get it into the 8's cool.gif

OK, ordered the Spirit/Lebaron cat back today with hi flow cat and Super Dynomax muffler(they all sound the same after a while-dyno super flow master etc..)

Will ask for tips and give reports and a sound clip when done.

The car sure seems faster at night with the top down...!

so your saying a 2.5 daytona exhuast will fit but a 3in daytona exhuast wont? is that much difference betweeen the 2 that its hard to get the over the axle section into place. reason i ask it because i have a 3in mandrel bent exhaust on my daytona and i have the 2 but havent looked under it to see honestly, i thought the space constraints would be the same

Update: my Tech pal says that eve this 2.5" system will hit in a couple places-he's having trouble making it clear.

The biggest problem is the Dynomax rectangular muffler is not cylindrical like our originals.

Anyone have any 2.5" mufflers they've used with success?

OK, the oval muffler won't fit up in the rear so I had to shell out another 75. for a dynomax round-hope it won't be to risotto-ish.

Having a bear of a time getting hangers in the right angle to fit this up. Looks cool though...

Cowancom, my 90 is completely stock. I'd like to replace the exhaust with a 2.5 system. I was looking on the FWD site and am having a hard time figuring out part #'s that I would order to get a complete system. Should I replace the exhaust manifold as well?? Then ,of course, the next question would be what is the 'best' direct fit for my TC?? ...so many questions....so little time... shocked.gif

Thanks Brian

You mean 'risotto-y'.

I ordered the oval muffler but it will not fit so she sent me the louder ultra flow cylindrical one-is that the louder one?

My guy is having a helluva time getting hangers to fit that won't rub. I may take it to his friend who's an exhaust wizard.

Had the system welded up in place by a true redneck backyard exhaust specialist. 150. smackers but he's a perfectionist(you wouldn't know by his oral hygeine though...).

Will post a sound clip-hope the Dynomax is not too juvenille...

You guys make such a big thing out of exhaust. This isn't the '60s any more. Don't you know that cars are supposed to be "not heard" any more.

On the other hand, I have a 2 1/2" system on my 8 valve car, the one with the 5 speed. I installed a little round muffler I bought way back in the '80s that was for the HP Omni. It's a straight through unit and definitely can be heard. My wife won't even ride in the car now. Then, that's not such a bad thing either.. Enjoy your sounds.
