Guest Larry Hammond
Need help removing the top cover on the front of the crankshaft. The ring on the front end of the crankshaft appears to be loose. How is it attached? Larry
Guest imported_RAH
Larry?? I am not sure what you are asking but remember the casting on the front of the engine is the front mounting support via that pipe through the frame where the crank hole plug goes. So, before attempting to remove that casting be certain to support the engine from underneath first. Why do you need to undo this? Perhaps there is an easier solution? Guest Larry Hammond
We are tring to get to the end of the crankshaft. The hand crack will not turn the crack shaft. It appears the whatever is on the end of the crankshaft is loose or partial gone and the hand crank will not engage. We are now thinking that the starter/generator must be removed to allow the top of the front casting to be removed exposing the timing type belt that drives the accessories and also exposing the front end of the crankshaft. nearchoclatetown
There's a silent chain that drives the starter/gen. CAn the engine be turned over by rocking in gear?
Guest Larry Hammond
The engine is free. There seens to be nothing for the hand crank to engage on the crankshaft. We can start the engine using the starter/generator, but we would like to expose the front end of the crackshaft and repair the part that mates with the hand crank. nearchoclatetown
There is a dowal pin in the crankshaft that the crank handle engages to turn it over. You would need to at least remove the oilpan to replace the pin if it is broken or missing. The crank is drilled and the dowal pressed in, it appears to be about 5/16. dwollam
Are you sure you have a Dodge Brothers crank handle? It should have notches in the end that will "ratchet" over the pin nearchoclatetown speaks of. It seems very unlikely the pin would fall out.Dave
Jan Arnett
Take a flashlight and look into the hole where the crank fits and should see the pin.
